Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
Alex, a young fellow who likes to draw, is amazed when one of his drawings comes to life with the aid of an unusual pencil belonging to his archeologist father. Events conspire to create trouble: a monster that Alex has drawn comes alive and seems intent on terrorizing people attending a real-life Renaissance Festival in town. Alex quickly draws a real Renaissance village, complete with people to help slay the monster, but when the threat turns out to be not from the monster, but from the people, then he has to go to plan B. The idea behind this story—that one can draw images that come to life—is wonderful, but there are problems. Some of the cartoon panels are small insets; if you miss one, you are likely to become confused. The plot is advanced not just by dialog but also by expository comments, and although this technique is used in many comic books, it interrupts the narrative flow of this short tale. There are a few puzzling twists in the story (one wonders why the monster looks so much like a medieval dragon), and the ending is ultimately not very satisfying. The illustrations are bright, colorful, but a bit too busy. The back of the book contains an interesting note about the author and how he draws in a digital age, and a few pages of instructions about how to draw a knight. Youngsters who are interesting in drawing may find this book, which is part of the "Mystical Pencil" series, an enjoyable experience. It will be an expensive one, however, as publishers continue to rebrand and market traditional comic books as high-priced graphic novels. For many readers, this book may not be worth the expensive price. Reviewer: Leona Illig
