Synopsis:
Hermia is in love with Lysander but her father forbids them to marry, insisting that she marries Demetrius instead, whom Hermia’s friend Helena loves. Hermia and Lysander escape to the woods, pursued by Demetrius and Helena. However there is trouble in the woods because the king and queen of the fairies, Oberon and Titania, have quarrelled. To spite Titania, Oberon instructs the mischievous Puck to squeeze the juice of a magic flower into her eyes while she sleeps, so that she falls in love with the first thing she sees when she wakes. He also instructs Puck to apply the same magic to Demetrius so that he will fall in love with Helena. However, Puck gets it all wrong...

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathie M. Josephs
If you have been afraid to read Shakespeare, or if you read it in school and want to revisit it for a better understanding, then this is certainly the way to start. This particular play has been a favorite of Shakespeare's works and this title is an unabridged play about a wonderful love story. Hermia is in love with Lysander, but her father forbids them to marry. She is given the choice of either marrying Lysander or going to a convent to live out her life. She and Lysander agree to secretly meet in the forest late at night. There has been an argument between the Fairy Queen and King, and things do not go as planned. The King instructs Puck to put the juice of a magic flower into the queen's eyes while she is asleep and she falls in love with the first thing she sees when she wakes up. This certainly presents a problem. Unfortunately Puck gets a lot of things wrong and everyone falls in love with the wrong person. This story is anything but boring, and first time readers will get a better understanding of the play in this format. It is fun to read, and the graphics add much interest to the storyline. The author provides information about Shakespeare, his birth place, the history of A Midsummer Night's Dream, and the Globe Theater. This is just one book of a three book series. This particular version is written in the original text. The second is written in Plain Text and the third is written in Quick Text. Take your pick, they are all great! Part of the "Classical Comics" series. Reviewer: Kathie M. Josephs
