Overview

After the death of her parents, Robbie Byrne is put in foster care where she meets her exact opposite, Luc Cintrone. Abandoned as a small child, Luc is a foul-mouthed rebel who takes it upon himself to be her defender, whether she likes it or not. As they grow up, they fumble through their different roles in each other's lives—family, confidants and then, ultimately, lovers.

Just as the couple is settling into their newfound relationship, they encounter a beautiful lawyer, Payten, who is immediately taken by Luc's rough edges. But he denies her, making him absolutely irresistible in her eyes. Payten is a woman who has grown accustomed in her privileged life in obtaining whatever she wants, no matter the cost or sacrifice. And she is fairly confident Luc will eventually see things her way…one way or another.

Meet the Author

Jolyn Palliata writes romance for adults and young adults alike, and has dabbled in just about every genre there is (paranormal being her favorite). By day she’s a technical trainer, and by night, an author and editor. All the time in between, you'll find her with her nose in a book (or eReader, as it were) and/or playing on Goodreads.

As a reader, Jolyn enjoys romance of all types. No sub-genre has proven to be a hard limit (yet), but she doesn’t do angst well, though she likes to delude herself into believing she’s getting better with it. (Uh-huh. Right.) She’s also a book hoarder who gets buyer's remorse after a marathon book buying spree on various eBook stores and publisher sites. This happens more often than she cares to admit, hence the Twitter name BookLoversGuilt.

For more information, please visit her website at www.JolynPalliata.com, or you can contact her directly at info.JolynPalliata(at)gmail(dot)com. You can also find her on Facebook or Goodreads. She loves interacting with her readers, or simply chatting about who’s reading what.

    One of My Favorites

"She punched through him, hollowed him out, and left nothing but herself behind-the sweet scent of her hair, the sounds of her pleasure, the intoxicating taste of her skin, the feel of her soft body yielding to his. Nothing but Robbie existed now. And he wondered if it would ever be any other way again."

The synopsis and the cover had me running to buy this book. What I wasn't expecting, was the roll of emotions this story made me feel. I was swooning, fist pumping, and yelling profanities. I can't even count how many times I wanted to kick Lucian in the tutu and how many times I wanted to take Payten out back, shoot her and bury the body.

Robbie and Luc's relationship is so deep and is based off of years of friendship and heartache. I often questioned through the beginning, why Luc was so blind to Robbie's advances, but Jolyn Polliata made their first moment together electric. All I thought at that moment was, "Thank God" and "You go girl". I was proud of Luc for finally giving in, even though he knew there would be chances of ruining the only person he loves.

"I love you so much, Robbie. Sometimes it feels like too much." His heart lurched as her eyes welled up. "But I trust it. I want it. And I want you. Always."

"Let me show you, Robbie," he murmured. "Let me show you how much I love you"

Let me be the first to say, Lucien is a wonderful, sweet, sexy man but, also one of the most frustrating and naive. I could not believe the things that he did, it was almost as if he never grew up. As I read the story more I realized, it was not because he was immature, it was because he didn't know how to be in a relationship. He's a playboy and when the one woman who has ever mattered to him, becomes more then just a friend, he doesn't know what to do. He, through many mistakes, redeems himself and has taken a seat on my shelf of favorite male characters.

I can go on all day about this story but, I don't want to ruin anymore of this story then I already have. This is by far one of my top ten favorites and resides nicely on my bookshelf with my other favorites.

"No. No what if's." She surprised him by arching in. "There's just us."

    4.25 stars
After witnessing the horrific & traumatizing accident that kills her parents, Robbie Byrne is placed in a foster home where she finds a friend and her first crush personified by her polarizing foster brother, Luc Cintrone. We watch their relationship grow through different phases and ages from awkward pre-teens to thriving young adults with quite a few obstacles and roadblocks in between. As usual from this author, the characters are so vividly drawn and their chemistry is so palpable you have to remind yourself they are fictional characters.

Approximately half of the book is sweetness and light (much like introductory Robbie to my thinking) and the second half is the direct opposite (representative of introductory Luc to me). I was extremely annoyed when the leads took separate vacations (her to Stupid-ville and him to Idiot-burg), but loved them together. What’s a love triangle without a 3rd person? (Well it’s not a love triangle.) The third person here is Payten Carmichael and Payten is determined to make the world her oyster and has the funds and the audacity to go as far as her mind will take her. Suffice it to say, Payten does not go gentle into that good night.

Other pluses to me included how risky it was to make your hero do things that border on unforgivable and bring him back to redemption; another was how great an unapologetically deplorable & diabolically despicable villain Peyton really is. I found myself hard put to not be passionate about this character as well – in a different direction but passionate nonetheless. Cynic that I am, I didn’t have an iota of faith that the villain was anything other what she turned out to be – a nest of wasps at a picnic.

What didn’t work well for me was Payten. I thought – great character but the introduction should have been earlier especially in light of how pivotal the character was. Because of the late intro she felt shoe-horned in and unbalanced the book. Again related to the Payten character but the shoe-horning resulted in plot holes (IMHO).

Ms. Palliata puts quite a bit of humanity in her writing and runs the complete gamut of emotions; in fact she does well with all of the standard mechanics that make a story. If you’ve not read some of her works it might be time to give yourself a little treat.

    Excellent!

This book had my heart racing, tears falling and knucles white! I loves this book. I don't reread books often, but Modern Romance will be one.
