A Mother's Gift: Lullabies from the Heart

Barnes & Noble - William Pearl
With A Mother's Gift Carrie Wilson, one-third of the hitmaking Wilson Phillips, opens her heart wide. With this valentine to her own child, and all the world’s other newborns, Wilson offers a suitably low-key set of pop lullabies that, while succeeding in calming children, will also hold the attention of adult listeners. Chestnuts mingle with contemporary tunes in a seamless blend. Wilson does justice to “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” “Over the Rainbow,” and “Love Me Tender” while also extracting the authentic sentiment in “You Are So Beautiful” movingly supported by her own father, Brian Wilson, “What a Wonderful World,” and others. Her solo voice crooning sweetly, Wilson proves that even without the soaring harmonies of her bandmates, she’s up to the job and then some. A delightful charmer, A Mother's Gift has all the makings of a perennial recording.
All Music Guide - Rob Theakston
Like her or not, Carnie Wilson has had one heck of a ride during her two-decade career in the spotlight. Whether it's as a member of hippie-offspring adult contemporary group Wilson Phillips, talk-show host, or being one of the first celebrities to publicly admit to having dangerous, stomach-shrinking surgery, Wilson has had more than her fair share of scrutiny under the spotlight. So this change in pace, while unsurprising, is refreshingly free of any tabloid-friendly controversy. A Mother's Gift: Lullabies from the Heart is a 12-song session of gentle lullabies for children. Wilson sings many American pop standards such as "Over the Rainbow," "Love Me Tender," and "What a Wonderful World." There's also pleasant surprises with Wilson sharing the microphone with her legendary father Brian on "You Are So Beautiful," and singing what is arguably her Uncle Dennis Wilson's finest composition "Forever." And while the original meaning of "Forever" is co-opted by Wilson in a different context, it's still a quite enjoyable performance. Her original compositions dwindle in comparison to the covers, but it's still a pleasant disc that will lull your little ones to golden slumbers.

    Carnie is Wonderful!

I say all these songs are very good. Carnie sang so great that any mother would love to hear. I enjoy listening to her with or without the group.

    I love this cd!

For those of us who have become somewhat (okay, extremely) sentimental since having children this cd is for us. The words are so touching. When the kids are tired I'll sometimes take them for a drive in the country and play this cd. I highly recommend this cd... but buy a box of kleenex as well.
