    An Inexpertly Crafted Violent Tale

Gary Burzell makes an attempt to tell a short, grisly story, but misses the mark. His story lacks suspense because the heroine achieves her goal too easily. He stabs at sentimentality to win empathy with the heroine, but he selected such a common trope and stripped it down to such barest essentials that it feels more like a cheap trick to rationalize violence. In fact, the entire story feels like it was built upon a shallow justification to graphically depict one character killing another. Burzell builds his spider around common misconceptions and sensational myths about black widows rather than facts. Real black widows are relatively passive creatures (they build webs and wait for prey rather than actively seek and destroy). Their venom is weaker than most people realize and most bite victims survive. Sticking to the facts would have negated the entire plot, which supports the suspicion that Burzell simply sought to write a sensational story (not in the superlative sense) about a violent act. In a greter context, his story reinforces the common cultural myth that revenge is an acceptable justification for murder. Burzell's story would have been more impressive if he had challenged the notion or transcended it altogether by providing an enlightened alternative from a unique perspective. It is possible to express higher minded philosophies while retaining the primal attraction of violence, as many skilled authors have already demonstrated. If Burzell continues to study dark and creepy tales written by such masters as Poe and Gaiman, and if he continues to sharpen his craft, then he may grow into a fine writer worth watching. The last few lines show that he does have promise.

Do not waste your time on this book.

This book is worthless. Why would anyone with any morals cuss in a childrens book or any book for that book for that matter.

People are over reacting. It was to short ony 12 pages. There was only one cuss word i think it is fine to be in the kids section. If you are young dont read it at night it may cause nightmares. Over all nce sort story.

    Sweet revenge.

I am so afraid of even the tiniest spider, but I won't kill one just because. Unless it is actually a threat, I manage to scoop it into something and put outside. After reading this story, I will certainly continue my good deed. Great story, but maybe not for kids.
