Overview

Presenting the fundamentals of child psychiatry in an enjoyable and easily readable format, this book is an accessible introduction to child mental health. It begins by looking at child development and the different theories used to explain mental health problems, including attachment theory. The nature and prevalence of child mental health problems are then described, as are treatment and management approaches. Particular attention is paid to at risk groups including, for instance, young offenders, children excluded from school and homeless children. The authors also consider the concept of mental health and the cultural context of its use.

Containing case studies and self-directed exercises, and outlining the services available to children with mental health problems, this handbook is an invaluable resource for students, trainers and professionals working or seeking to work with children with mental health problems in a non-medical environment, as well as parents wanting to know more about the subject.

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Arguing that specialization of child health and mental health agencies has lead to a situation in which professionals are unaware of the broad issues of child mental health, this volume presents a plain language introduction to the major areas of the topic. After discussing the definitions of mental health, chapters explain the basic theories of child and family development, look at the causes of mental health problems in young people, and discuss specific mental health problems. While avoiding in-depth facts and research findings, the material still addresses some of the controversies in the field, such as the treatment or even real existence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Reviewer: Ozlem Dubauskas, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This handbook covers key issues in the mental health of children and adolescents.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an introduction to child and adolescent mental health. It also intends to enlighten and support readers about current problems and their solutions in those areas.
Audience: The audience includes mental health workers and social workers, psychology students and interns, psychiatry nurses and teachers, as well as politicians and administrators who are interested in behavioral and emotional problems in children and adolescents.
Features: This book includes valuable and basic information about psychological development of children. It provides summarized information about developmental theories in a very organized manner and numerous tables enhance the understanding of this material. The book also refers to different mental health assessment methods for different developmental groups. Although the authors include the biological factors leading to emotional and behavioral problems, they prefer to underline the environmental and familial factors. One of the chapters covers major psychiatric disorders in young people ranging from bipolar disorder and psychosis to eating disorders and substance abuse. Basic and specialized treatment strategies are included in different chapters. Multiple case studies and self-assessment questions turn reading into a fun activity. Regulations and laws about child mental health are provided in a simple and summarized language. The audience will find exercises and case study solutions as well as a very helpful index at the end of the book.
Assessment: This is a well-organized mini summary of child mental health disorders and treatment strategies. It is highly recommended especially to teachers, child mental health workers, and politicians.
