"A Musicall Banquet"

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - EJ Johnson
In 1610, Robert Dowland (son of the well-known composer John Dowland) published two collections of music: A Varietie of Lute-Lessons and A Musicall Banquet. The second of these -- the source for this like-titled album -- is a wide-ranging compilation of songs that Dowland fils described (with charming period spelling) as "a varietie of delicious Ayres Collected out of the best Authors in English, French, Spanish, and Italian." He goes on to say that the songs were "gathered out of the labours of the rarest and most judicious Masters of Music that either now are or have lately lived in Christendom." This grand claim, while debatable, is not without truth: The collection ...

He goes on to say that the songs were "gathered out of the labours of the rarest and most judicious Masters of Music that either now are or have lately lived in Christendom." This grand claim, while debatable, is not without truth: The collection contains several gems, such as Dowland père's despairing "In Darkness Let Me Dwell," or Caccini's mournful lament "Amarili mia bella." Andreas Scholl, who is the soloist here, may be the world's most recorded countertenor, and for good reason. He possesses a fine instrument and sings with expression and elegant precision. Some may find his singing -- and these songs (most of which are accompanied by a variety of lutes) -- a touch too precious. To be sure, this is refined, delicate music, but Scholl delivers it beautifully with his accustomed consummate style.
