Author Price has written an excellent thirty-two page picture book about the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg. Four chapters, many photographs, and simple sidebars give an adequate picture of a complicated topic. Chapter one describes the reasons for the war, slavery, and states' rights. A map shows the states that belonged to the Union and the states that wanted to form their own country called the Confederate States of America. General Robert E. Lee invaded the North, but did not plan on fighting in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. General Meade did not want to fight at Gettysburg either, but both armies just happened to meet at Gettysburg by accident. Chapter three begins with a description of the battle that began on July 1, 1863. The Union trips were outnumbered and had to retreat. By the next day, the Union troops had more soldiers and took a stand on Culp's Hill. Both sides fought fiercely, but the Union troops prevailed that day. On the third day, General Lee came back with a full attack, but the Confederates did not stand a chance. Thousands of soldiers died under heavy gunfire. The North won, but at a high price. They lost more than 23,000 men. The South lost 28,000 soldiers. The Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle in U.S. history. It was also the deciding factor in ending the Civil War. In 1865, Lee surrendered his army, and soon after, the rest of the South gave up. The war was over. A glossary, further reading, and internet sites appear in the back of the book. Reviewer: Della A.
