Overview

With the growl of a Marine sergeant, Senator Zell Miller leaves no doubt that he believes his own Democratic Party is badly out of step with most of the country and needs to shape up or ship out. As part of a stinging critique of the Democratic Party, Miller outlines key positions on important issues that can again make the party relevant for the entire nation. From tax cuts to welfare, gun control to the environment, the arts to education, immigration to terrorism, Miller identifies values that make sense to a growing majority of Americans. Many party loyalists will not like what Senator Miller writes; yet his credentials are beyond question, for few Democrats have worked longer or stronger for the party and its candidates. Zell Miller has served in an elective office in each of the last six decades. When he left office as governor after two terms, he had an 85 percent approval rating, prompting the Washington Post to call him the most popular governor in the country. After getting to Washington, he became President Bush's biggest Democratic supporter, but steadfastly refused to switch parties. A National Party No More is a firsthand account from the enigmatic senator who has confounded his Democratic colleagues. Driven by conscience and common sense, Senator Miller names the self-destructive direction of his party and stubbornly pulls the Democratic family toward reform.

    Awesome

Finally, a democrat that tells the truth that we all knew about the democratic party. One of the best books I've ever read. We'll miss him as Senator down here in GA.

    zell miller is the man!!!!!!!!!

zell miller is a breath of fresh air and he lets you know it in his new book and bestseller 'a national party no more' this is a new look at the democract party by one of its senior members and he found out that he was a conservative at heart and that the democract party was not standing with the american people or for the american people and he felt they had left him out and the basic values that he grew up with that shaped his life from his days in georgia to his time in the marines these values that he charised so highly were not a apart of his party any more and so that is why he sat down to write this book 'a national party no more' this is probably one of the most moving political books that you will ever read in your entire life. if you have a friend or family member who has a birthday coming up or perhaps they saw the convention on tv and you want to do something nice for them get them zell millers book' a national party no morethis is a man with real corps values!

    A Marvelous Read!!

Whether you agree with Zell Miller on not, he brings to mind, page after page after page, the values upon which this country was founded and prospered. His clear, direct comments resonate particularly well with me; we are within six months of being the same age and had similar beginnings. Although his was poorer than mine, we experienced many of the same things. Whether he's speaking of a mother who, having lost her husband when Zell was quite small, moved heaven and earth (literally!!) to provide a home for him, or a family who was too proud to accept clothing as a gift for their own but were willing to work in exchange for them, he takes us back to a time when people were proud and independent and did not feel that they were 'entitled' to have the government take care of them. Miller's anecdotes are 'country boy' in nature, explicit and unambiguous. One is left with the feeling that he never need ask Zell how he REALLY feels about something. Also refreshing is his ability to admit when, at one point in his life, he was on the wrong side of an issue. He speaks with deep regret about having been on the wrong side of the civil rights issue. Zell, by his own admission, has been a Democrat all his life and 'will die one'. He has maintained his party affiliation even though the party abandoned the south during and following the Nixon administration. He laments the liberal domination of his party and, as a consequence, frequently votes with the opposition. Reading 'A National Party No More', I think back on the likes of Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, and John Adams, all of whom were men of strong beliefs and character. Zell Miller should feel quite at home among their ranks.

First and American, then a Democrat!

Zell Miller shows his 'real' stuff in writing this book. A true leader is one that can make decisions for the good of the people and take the flack from those that do not understand. From the Governor's Mansion in Atlanta to the Senate in Washington, DC, I feel that this man has done more to advance what this country is all about than all of the other Democrats in Congress put together. Mr. Miller understands the vision of our forefathers and he understands his duty to this country and to those who elected him better than any man I know. He is a Representative of the People and not an arrogant loud mouth like a Ted Kennedy who has 'broken every rule in the book' and then expects respect for his audacity. I would challange all Americans to read this book and see just how Great a Man Zell Miller really is. I take my hat off to him in respect to his values and honesty, and I applaud his efforts for the people of Georgia and of these United States.

One of the best political books of our time.

Senator Zell Miller pulls no punches with his latest book. He simply identifies the problems and recommends solutions to a party that has truly left him behind.

A disapointment from a once great Democrat

Like Sen. Miller, I am a proud Southerner. However, unlike Senator Miller, I am not Republicrat. No, I am a proud Democrat. I'm no liberal but a Democrat. I do not know what happened to Sen. Miller. In reading this book, I see lots of things, and see lots of omissions. I see Sen. Miller forget that most of his staff is Republican, and they guide him to the right. He forgets that the Department of Homeland Defense was a Democratic idea, stolen by the GOP and then exploited. He forgets the way the President treated Sen. Max Cleland (and Governor Zell Miller in 2000 before he became a GOP lacky). In short, Sen. Miller has sold out. This proud Alabaman and small businessman, as well as life long Baptist and Democrat, doesn't know what hit Sen. Miller. I used to love the guy. Reading this book stabbed me like a thousand Republican knives. He is now for tax cuts for the rich, budget cuts in social welfare and Republican budgetary policies. Whatever happened to Gov. Miller?

    Zell gives 'em hell!

Did you vote for Bill Clinton, only to be disappointed by excesses of the Clinton administration? Did you go into shock as you watched Al Gore, who used to be a conservative Democrat, tilt further and further left during the 2000 presidential campaign until his candidacy collapsed? Are you disgusted at the rogue's gallery of candidates running for the Democratic nomination in 2004? Then Zell Miller's THE CONSCIENCE OF A CONSERVATIVE DEMOCRAT is the book for you. Miller defends himself from the charge that he is 'Bush lite' by reminding readers that JFK voted to cuts taxes across the board to stimulate the economy, and that it was the first Democrat, Thomas Jefferson, who fought for creating a smaller, more efficient government that is accountable to those it governs. Another strong point Miller makes is that there is a place for some government spending on education, welfare, and other social programs. However, unlike the grab bag of special interests our national candidates are tripping over themselves to appease, these programs must yield positive results that can be measured; and they should be sponsored by leaders who have first won the voters' trust by cutting taxes and holding the line on wasteful spending. Miller did this when he was governor of Georgia, and currently that state has one of the strongest economies not only in the New South but in the entire nation. Miller is as tough on himself as he is on others, especially regarding his past mistakes on race. In the book, as well as in his voting record, I would like to see him distance himself more from President Bush, who isn't really a fiscal conservative, and also to go after more of the pork-barrel spending he condemns, such as the egregious farm subsidy bill that has nothing to do with national defense, the Medicare prescription drug benefit that props up high costs by handing billions of dollars to drug companies without implementing genuine reform, and the $300 billion Santa Claus bill passed at the end of 2003 by the House of Representatives. Nevetheless, given the motley crew before us now, I'd gladly vote for Miller for president. I wish he'd run!

    Overbroad message from flawed messanger

Senator Zell Miller is certainly different from Governor Zell Miller - and this book shows us just that. As Governor, Zell Miller was a moderate Democrat who envisioned a role for tax cuts, public schools, health care, civil rights and social justice, as well as moderation, fiscal conservatism and cultural values. However, as Senator, Sen. Miller has been an illogical one note tribute to President Bush and the Republican party. He has done nothing for health care (except vote for an attrocious Medicare bill), public schools, jobs, etc. All he has done is champion ill timed tax cuts geared towards the rich. He tells us he is for common folks. Yeah, right. And so is George Bush. Yet, I really don't think Zell Miller thinks privately he is for the rich - and this book shows that. He is proud Georgia working class. So why is he supporting the President? I really can't tell you why. All I can do is wonder what happened to that Democrat who inspired me and so many others at the 1992 Convention, and yet now tears down so much of what he worked for all because, I suspect, he does not like the elitist Washington Democrats. He tells us he is for our 'war time' President. Yet, this 'war time President' has had the gall to disgrace Georgia's finest, Max Cleland, as well as America's finest, John McCain. He was against the original Department of Homeland Security (something Sen. Miller, in strange partisanship for the GOP, never mentions). Sen. Miller's story is filled with inconsistencies - like how he's become a Republican! Senator Zell Miller: Please, come back home. Roosevelt, Truman, Johnson and the rest of us are waiting for you! The Georgia Democratic party of Sam Nunn, Max Cleland (who was disgraced by our 'war time' President), GOVERNOR Zell Miler and Jimmy Carter waits for you! In the great words of that Baptist hymn, 'come home.'

I knew there were HONEST Democrats left!

This is an outstanding read. Miller clearly articulates the EXTREME leftist bend of the Modern Democrat party. It seems the Republican party of today more closely mirrors the Democrat party of the 50's when they actually stood up for us working folks.

Hypocritical look at a party in need of criticism

Like Sen. Miller, I am a Democrat. Also like Sen. Miller I believe the party needs reform: We pay too much attention to special interest groups, neglect rural voters, have inherited cultural elitist values in some areas and neglect mainstream values in the eyes of too many. We need more New Democrats. But Sen. Miller is not the one to bring that message. Sen. Miller accuses Democrats of being the party of spend, spend, spend. And yet, he voted for - all at once - a Democratic prescription drug plan which cost up to $1 trillion and both Bush tax cuts (combined cost: $4 trillion). In his book, he talks about his neglected South. Yet, his tax cuts saw little go to poor Southerners and he votes to cut down worker protections on OSHA. He barks about Democratic lack of 'values' but then ignores Pres. Bush's lack of respect for military veterans who sacrificed all in campaigns (John McCain in 2000 and Sen. Clealand in 2002) as well as Bush cuts in veteran's benefits. He has become a hand puppet for the GOP - and a predictable one at that. Sen. Miller used to be one of my favorite Democrats. He was a bold, innovative centrist who believed in change and independence, but always was a proud Democrat. Something changed when he came to Washington. He became a hypocrite, willing to always criticize, but never be part of the answer. He has some good points in this book, but his fiscal indulgence (big budgets + big tax cuts = $500 billion deficit) makes him a hypocrite. Sen. Miller is right in this book in one aspect: There is a huge problem in Washington, and the Democratic party, as it relates to average Americans. Yet, Sen. Miller, the spendaholic Senator from Georgia who barks about poor Southerners and then refuses to raise the Minimum Wage and supports $3 trillion in tax cuts geared towards the wealthy, is not the man to bring us that message. This once great public servant should be commended for writing some much needed words in the book. However, these words would be better uttered by a former Georgia Senator whose independence never caused him to endorse Republicans: Senator Sam Nunn. I say this book has some good messages, but they are overwhelmed by the stunning hypocrisy of this media savy Republicrat whose 'independence' is really a form of pandering to the newest powers that be and a betrayal of everything he (hypocritically, seemingly) fought for as Governor.

    Prediction: This sellout won't sell-out

Zell Miller's entire book-buying audience will be conservatives who revel in the falsehood that Zell Miller has, like a born-again Christian, been born-again Republican -- in time to be saved and go to heaven of course. Zell Miller votes Republican in the Senate. He votes for $100,000 tax breaks on luxury SUV's (not like the F150 pick-up. I drive). He has been schmoozing on Bush since day one. So there was no religious epiphany here. Rather, a fraud who claimed to be a dem has finally outed himself as the right-winger that he always has been. And this is bookworthy? I guess with s many conservatives waking up to the lies of Bush, it's pretty notable to see anyone going in the other direction.

    A Voice of Sanity...too late?

Senator Miller has unveiled the ugly truth, about Washington, how it is run, and how folks get there in recent years. While unloading on his beloved Democrat Party, he doesn't spare the rod when discussing the entire legislative process in today's highly charged political environment. It is shameful when otherwise intelligent and capable people turn every minor item into a partisan 'issue', and use lies, slander and deceit to hold or gain power. Zell Miller is a great American, his book should be required reading for every voter. Armed with truth, maybe we could all make better decisions in the polling booth!

    Powerful, Witty, and Eye-Opening!

This is blockbusting, historical account of the rise and fall of the national Democrat Party by Georgia's elder statesman, who just happens to be a Democrat! Senator Miller lays the foundation for a compelling case of why the South, once the home of the Democrat Party, is now the Republican Party's stronghold...and key to future presidential races. A must read for every American as we enter the presidential campaign season!

    Powerful and Entertaining...

This is a powerful insider's account of the changed face of the Democrat Party. From national prominence to possible obscurity. This is how Senator Miller portrays his own party in this well-written and entertaining book! It is an eye opening expose of a party that once ruled the South and now has utter comtempt for it. This is a must read for every American who cares about the future of the Republic, especially as we now enter the election season.

A National Party No More: The Conscience of a Conservative Democrat

I heard Sean Hannity and Newt Gingrich talk about this book on the radio. They are right. Senator Miller is a couregeous soul for taking on his own party just before a presidential election year. If the Dems don't wake up it may be too late. They have strayed too far from the values of most Americans.

A National Party No More: The Conscience of a Conservative Democrat

Just read this and was trying to purchase a copy for a friend. The Senator offers a stinging criticism of his own democratic party and its current presidential hopefuls. He suggests the dems have written off a third of the nation and are out of touch with the heartland. I think he is right. If the dems want to govern nationally again they had better listen to their own Senator and heed his advice.
