Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Fothergill has overseen this book from its beginning as a series of natural history films that won an international Emmy for the BBC. The specially commissioned photographs are impressive, encouraging examination and occasionally interrupting the flow of the text. Chapters follow the Antarctic year, with an emphasis on particular areas and species. Thus, "The Bountiful Sea," a winter chapter, focuses on invertebrates, fish, whales, and seals, while "The Sun Returns" begins with spring and focuses on birds, seals, and penguins. British spelling is used throughout. This book can be read for its natural history text, which stands without the illustrations, or enjoyed for its photography. The closest competition is Ron Naveen's Wild Ice (LJ 11/15/90). Recommended for larger public libraries, medium to large academic libraries, or where the Antarctic is of interest.-Jean E. Crampon, Hancock Biology & Oceanography Lib., Univ. of Southern California, Los Angeles
