Overview

Marilee Abernathy's life is a mess. Everyone in Chickpea, South Carolina, knows about her husband's affair with the town floozy. But when her dignified farewell -- complete with pearls and impeccably applied Mary Kay cosmetics -- turns into a spectacularly unsuccessful attempt to hang herself from a fake ceiling beam, Marilee figures there has to be another way to cope.

Marilee needs a new attitude -- at least, that's what her neighbor Sam Brewer thinks. Between his demanding mother and his crazy ex-wife, though, the last thing he wants is another woman whose life is out of control. But Marilee's learning on her own that a little attitude can go a long way -- suddenly she's taking charge and taking chances she'd never imagined. And watching her blossom reminds Sam of some long-forgotten dreams of his own. Now he's just got to convince her to turn some of that attitude his way . . .

Marilee Abernathy has plenty of attitude. That's why she decides that impeccably applied makeup and a string of pearls are what a proper southern lady should wear to end her own life after her preacher husband dumps her for a hussy. Fortunately, she realizes just in time that the result of this particular attitude would be disaster. What she really wants is to change her life, not to end it. Fate provides the perfect partner, Sam Brewer, a neighbor who comes to her aid when he hears her scrambling to escape her drapery-cord noose. Sam is already dealing with his mother, who claims to be losing her marbles, and his nutty ex-wife, who keeps turning to him to untangle the trouble she makes for herself. The last thing he needs in his life is another crazy woman -- but he can't resist following the example of Marilee's appealing new attitude. They both have a lot to learn about the charm of new beginnings and their new attitude's power to make long-abandoned dreams come true. A New Attitude will have you cheering for the steel magnolia with the soft heart and her wonderful new beau.

When her husband, a preacher, leaves Marilee Abernathy for the town floozy, she wants to commit suicide, due to the shame. But the comedic failures at this strategy lead her to the great looking bad boy Sam, who rescues her (more than once) from her pratfalls. Her attempts to rebuild her life lead Marilee to work in a funeral home and sing in a supper club, both of which provide the author with ample opportunities to show off her offbeat southern humor. So do her charity efforts, as she grows more self confident. What especially made this story so good was the depth of the supporting cast, including Marilee's son, and her three comedic sidekicks (who help her with her attitude). These characters are very memorable and call out for a sequel!

In Chickpea, South Carolina, Reverend Grady Abnernathy deserts his Church and leaves his wife Marilee to live in sin with LaFonda Bonaire at the Tall Pines Trailer Park. Due to Marilee¿s nagging, their teenage son moves in with his dad too. Now Marilee simply plans to commit suicide as she feels her life is over.

However, Marilee¿s efforts to kill herself fail as she cannot even do that right. Marilee self feelings have gotten much worse and depression seems imminent when she meets builder Sam Brewer, who has just returned home to care for his ailing mother. With the encouragement of her friends and with Sam making her feel good, Marilee begins to start life anew with A NEW ATTITUDE and a confidence that she previously lacked. As Sam and Marilee fall in love, both mistrust permanent relationships as each one has suffered from pa previous marital failure.

Though some readers will find A NEW ATTITUDE as a dark romantic romp similar to the movie The End, many fans will appreciate the amusing tale with a serious undertone. The story line contains humorous situations and characters the audience will like, especially the lead couple though why Marilee chose suicide when she knows Grady has the problems will leave readers perplexed. Still, Charlotte Hughes writes an engaging Southern small town romantic romp.
