Some of the treatments have a surprisingly reverential beauty: Ben Johnston's version of "The First Noel," for example, which manages to evoke medieval harmonies and the drones of Middle Eastern music using these four unlikely instruments. The ensemble includes a full complement of saxes: soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone. Other arrangers take off on the jazzy ...

But by commissioning an eclectic array of inventive arrangements from a diverse group of composers, the New Century Saxophone Quartet has cooked up a winning holiday feast. The ensemble includes a full complement of saxes: soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone. Other arrangers take off on the jazzy connotations of the saxophone, even adding drum set and bass on some selections. "Funkin' with the Bells" is Lenny Pickett's rollicking take on a familiar Ukrainian carol, while Benjamin Boone's "We Four Kings" enters Latin territory. Obvious pop numbers such as "Jingle Bell Rock" alternate with restrained pieces such as Bach's "In Dulci Jubilo." With a surprise around each corner, this is an album full of fine musicianship and abundant good cheer.
