This updated revision of a standard reference work in use since 1961 has the advantage of a generic rather than a chronological arrangement. In addition to poetry, fiction, and drama, it boasts an account of prose nonfiction that ranges from the works of Andres Bernaldez to literary critic Menendez Pidal. Especially to accommodate the impressive output of writers since the death of Franco, some material has been deleted, but the authors hope that libraries will retain their originals alongside the updated version. Yet no individual writer from the original has been omitted. Indeed, so intent on total coverage are the authors that whenever writers cannot feasibly be analyzed at length, those with potential talent are cataloged in summary lists with their dates of birth. There is no bibliography, but the indexing by title, author, and movement is exceptionally thorough. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.-- Jack Shreve, Allegany Community Coll., Cumberland, Md.
