Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
The fifth edition reaffirms A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish as the most practical and comprehensive Spanish grammar book on the market. By illustrating grammar through references to English and other languages, the authors have created a unique resource, giving the English-speaking reader access to a wealth of knowledge about the Spanish language, explained in a clear, cohesive and effective way. This new edition is the first to incorporate the findings of the latest Nueva gramática de la lengua española, published by the Real Academia Española, making it compulsory reading for students at all levels, academics, translators and professionals interested in mastering the intricacies of the Spanish language. - Javier Muñoz-Basols, University of Oxford, UK

The 5th edition of Butt and Benjamin's New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish manages to improve an already outstanding text. It should be standard issue for all serious students of Spanish. - Ian MacKenzie, Professor of Spanish Linguistics, School of Modern Languages, Newcastle University, UK

A New Reference is a title we consider compulsory as a reference book for our students in the final year of their BA and BComm International programmes, and also at MA level. I also use it as a reference and I have always found it very useful. This new edition will be even more useful as it includes the new spelling and accent rules and a glossary of computing vocabulary. It is definitely the only grammar book in the market for final year graduate and postgraduate students. - Begoña Sangrador-Vegas, School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, National University of Ireland, Galway

Finally, a book that answers all of my Spanish grammar questions.

This is a fantastic book! If you are tired of paging through your Spanish textbook trying to find a particular grammatical rule or example, this is an excellent reference. The book is well organized with both theoretical explanations of grammar and many examples, both correct and intentionally incorrect. It points out important differences between English and Spanish grammar (and occasionally notes differences from and similarities to French and German for those who might have some experience with those languages). The book illustrates how these differences can cause the common mistakes that English speakers make in Spanish. It shows what sounds a bit strange in Spanish and mentions what forms are so particular to native speakers (or regions) that they are best left to native speakers. Although the preface states that the book is 'not really intended for beginners', I would disagree even as a beginner myself. Despite the abundance of advanced material, the quality and clarity of the writing make the concepts accessible to a beginner, especially if you are the type of person who likes to understand the rules (and flexibilities) rather than just hoping you will eventually get a 'feel' for the correct sentence structures. The book does not provide a tutorial of the basic ideas of grammar, but a general knowledge of grammar in English (direct objects, verb tenses, etc.) is sufficient to understand the discussions. The introduction of each chapter clarifies the book¿s particular use of grammatical terms as needed, and a glossary defines the grammatical terms. Because this book does not waste space with tutorials, I expect that this book will continue to be a valuable reference no matter how advanced I might become in Spanish. This book includes many cross references to other sections that allow one to easily follow how a concept relates to other areas of the Spanish grammar. Each cross reference is a section number that conveniently avoids frequent use of the index. Style guides for capitalization and punctuation (and their variations) also appear in the book. One chapter thoroughly discusses irregular verbs and shows how the variations for most classes of irregular verbs still follow consistent rules. I highly recommend this book for any serious, English-speaking student or user of Spanish.
