For years I have watched the Bridgertons attend Smythe-Smith musicales and wondered when those girls would get their story. This second installment in the Smythe-Smith quartet is more than I could have ever asked for.
What I love about Julia Quinn's characters is that they are believable people. I throughly enjoy her story-telling, and cannot wait for the next installment.

Running, hiding, and always looking over your shoulder are no way to live. Both Daniel Smythe-Smith, the Earl of Winstead and Anne Wynter have been chasing and trying not to be noticed for too many years. Daniel is finally free of his demon, or so he hopes and finds Anne just when things are looking up is no coincidence.
Anne’s poor decisions created a situation where she cannot reveal her true identity. She needs the governess job she holds to make sure she can survive and still looks over her shoulder every moment of the day. Daniel is more than a distraction for her; he is a complete and total obsession. The feelings are mutual for both of them and they know the obstacles. The question becomes which one will have the good sense to stop a relationship before it starts. Anne will allow one kiss to hopefully put a stop to it all but that one moment of bliss is the heart of every magical moment either of them could have imagined.
Daniel will pursue, Anne will taunt, and both will make wishes upon stars in the night. But will any of it fulfill their desire to be together. What Daniel wants he normally achieves but this time the hurdles are society as well as family with both proving to be daunting opponents what the heart wants. When Daniel becomes Anne’s protector and they both show how strong they are together perhaps, the walls between them can come down.
Julia Quinn has the ability to take the written word and turn it into a magical experience. Readers are always treated to the joy of romance and the passion that comes from the simple touch of a hand.

This was a great read that kept me entranced. I am a Julia Quinn fan and
I have read all of her books. I thought this was better than her last. I love romances that contain characters that actually converse and laugh. The dialogue in this book was quick witted and funny. Plus, I'm a sucker for the damsel in distress, so I fell for this hook, line, and sinker. It was nice that the damsel had a brain. Way to go Julia!

This one is not worth $7, maybe not even worth checking out from the library. She had to have written this in less than a week. The characters fell in love immediately and there was no real reason why, nor any chemistry or tension. The hero of the story seemed a little on the simpleminded side and immature. The plot could have been very well done, but was resolved with extremely little effort and not even wrapped up very well. The writing was at about a jr high or lower level of difficulty. I've read teen lit that was more sophisticated.

This was the second book in the Smythe-Smith Quartet Series. I enjoyed it more than the first! This is about Daniel, The Earl of Winstead, the older brother of the Smythe-Smith girls. The story begins with a young Daniel seriously injuring a friend in a duel. Yes, it is an accident, but he still must flee the country or risk retribution by a vengeful father. Then we jump three years and Hugh the friend Daniel injured comes to tell him all is forgiven to please come home. He arrives home on the day of the year that his very musical (wink, wink) female siblings/cousins are performing in the annual Smythe-Smith Quartet Musicale. Sarah one of his cousins fakes illness to get out of playing in the musical and in her place is the governess Anne. Daniel sees Anne from the back of the room where he is hiding to avoid a scene and when their eyes meet there is an instant connection. Yes, they fall in love and live happily ever after, but this story is a very enjoyable read getting to that point. Anne has a secret and is in danger and must eventually rely on Daniel to save her. I really enjoyed the younger cousins interactions with each other and Daniel. They infused a lot of humor in this book. Looking forward to the next Smythe-Smith Book!!! I was introduced to this delightful family last year with Just Like Heaven. The Smythe-Smith is a family who upholds tradition especially when it comes to the Smythe-Smith Quartet. The family has a lot going for them but musical talent is not one of those things. Every year the family gathers to put on a ghastly musical. This particular book focuses on Anne Wynter. She's is not a Smythe-Smith but rather the governess of Harriet, Elizabeth, and Frances, that steps in when one of the members of the quartet falls suddenly ill.
Daniel Smythe-Smith has just returned from exile. Although he's assured that all has been forgiven, he can't help but still look over his shoulder. He's immediately attracted to Anne. Both characters have secrets they've been hiding. Anne thwarts all of Daniels attempts to woo her. She has a shady past that has taught her to stay clear of men like Daniel but she can't help but be attracted to him and living under the same roof as him threatens to undo everything she's worked so hard for.
I loved every page of this book. Julia Quinn has quite a knack for story telling. She combines romance, humor, and a bit of danger and turns out a fantastic story. The Smythe-Smith's are an endearing family that I wish I was apart of. Daniel's and Anne's story is fantastic but I have to say Anne's students Harriet, Elizabeth, and Frances stole the show. These three girls are hilarious. Their dialog and banter literally made me laugh out loud at times. I love how Quinn writes her characters. I could picture the expressions on their faces which made me laugh even more. The Smythe-Smith's are characters that will warm your heart and win you over. Overall I thought this is a great story. This is a series that I highly recommend. You won't regret it!

I have read many of Julia Quinn's novels and this one was ok, but not nearly as exciting as her other books. I was disappointed.

Like many other reviewers, the first time I read this addition to the Smythe-Smith series, it fell a little flat. However, as a fan of Ms. Quinn's novels, I decided to give it another shot, and this time I was not disappointed. I loved reading as the characters learned about each other, especially the play. Not Ms. Quinn's best effort, but still a fun and entertaining love story.

It was pretty good. I loved the fact that it also made me laugh a lot. Clever humor went pretty well with Tue story. Would recommend reading it.

This book, while continuing the story of the musical Smythe-Smith family, is not as funny and engaging as the other books that include these "old friends". It seemed somewhat flat and had it been the first Julia Quinn I had read, I probably would not bother with reading another. The book was almost like meeting up with old friends at a party you had looked forward to but the party just was slightly off. Happy to catch up with old friends but not as much fun as you anticipated. I look forward to Quinn's novels b/c of the humor and the continuity of the stories... the re-appearance of "old friends" but for some reason this novel did not do it for me.

Very disappointing! I read all of Julia Quinn's books and they are fun,
light, and very enjoyable. This book was terrible. I had a difficult
time believing this was her writing...it was so bad! I will think
twice before buying her next book!
