Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
Recorded at the height of her popularity during her 1986 tour, Anita Baker: A Night of Rapture Live reminds fans why the elusive songstress was once crowned Queen of the Quiet Storm. When the Grammy-winning Baker disappeared from the music scene after 1994's Rhythm of Love, she left a void in contemporary R&B for those yearning for grown folks' soul music -- one that can't be filled by girlish fluff from Beyoncé and Ashanti.
But on the nine songs collected here -- mostly from Baker's 1986 debut disc, Rapture, and recorded at several venues including Washington, D.C.'s Constitution Hall -- her smoldering, jazzy vocals are given new life. Although her voice is sometimes off key, as on the shaky opening track, "Caught Up in the Rapture," even Baker's imperfections are endearing, and she quickly gets her groove back on the haunting "Mystery" and the scat-accented "Been So Long." The rest of the disc finds Baker, who is reportedly working on a new album with Babyface, in equally fine voice. The diva sparks even more nostalgia with stirring, gospel-informed renderings of "You Bring Me Joy," featuring a sax solo by Gerald Albright, and the showstopper "Sweet Love." The only surprise is an improvisational reading of Van Morrison's "Moondance," produced by George Duke and recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Throughout, Baker proves to be a class act whose elegance has been sorely missed. With this disc, fans old and new can get caught up in her rapture all over again.

Finally, a live CD from Anita Baker!!

I listen to this CD EVERYDAY! I was so glad they put together a compilation of Anita Baker's live performances! This is a must-have because every song is slightly different from the album version, it makes it truly special! My family and I just saw her on July 4th live in concert, so now this CD means more to me! She also recorded her July 12th performance at DTE Energy Music Theater in Clarkston,MI for an upcoming DVD/CD collection of that performance, I can't wait!!!!
