Overview

Darla Pettistone may have inherited her great aunt Dee’s Brooklyn bookstore, but it’s the store’s mascot—an oversized black cat named Hamlet—who acts like he owns the place. And when someone turns up dead, Hamlet smells something rotten in Brooklyn…

As the owner of Pettistone’s Fine Books, Darla is settling nicely into her new life, even reaching an uneasy truce with Hamlet. Unfortunately, when she needs to hire a new clerk, the finicky feline decides to lend a paw to the hiring process. He chases away applicants who don’t meet his approval, finally settling on an unlikely candidate: Robert, a book-loving Goth kid who has a secret only Hamlet knows.

And Hamlet can’t seem to stay out of trouble. One of the bookstore’s regular customers, a man who is renovating a local brownstone, claims he’s seen Hamlet prowling the neighborhood. When the man’s business partner is found dead, Darla discovers that Hamlet may have been the only witness to what could be murder. With the crafty cat’s help, she wonders if they just might be able to pounce on a killer...

Ali Brandon has written a great second book in what I hope is a long series. What I liked is that it had some twists that kept me guessing until the end. The charactors were believable especially Hamlet the cat. I highly recommend this book.

this second book in the series is every bit as good as the first if not better. darla has inherited a bookstore in brooklyn, n.y., and has moved there from texas. culture shock aside, she has managed to make this place her new home. a man renovating a place across the street is murdered and her friend is suspected of it. darla investigates and nearly loses her life. her black cat is her saviour. hamlet the black cat is a picky cat, doesn't make friends with just anyone. the mixture of books, cat, friends, and mystery make for a very interesting read. don't miss it!

Love the story line and the cat is so funny, and true to cat behavior.

Enjoyed this second in the series from beginning to end. Had an unpredictable cat like that and could relate to the unexpected antics as though I were there. Keep up these great mysteries! I look forward to the next one.

I am a cozy mystery reader. This is the best setting for a mystery (besides a castle during a storm)..a bookstore with a persnickety black cat. The pro's of this story....good characters including a black cat who enjoys a good book; a great setting; a decent plot. The con's of this story....a main character who is obsessed with local crimes and can't help but include herself into the drama even when it doesn't directly affect her AND suspects everyone closest to her EXCEPT the actual murderer. This makes for a "dumb" main character which gets to be a little disappointing. No one wants a main character that can't see what is right in front of her face. The "dumbing down" of the main character in this #2 in this series made this a slightly disappointing read. I recommend that you read #1 of this series....it was much better!!

Plenty of suspects and enough twists to keep you guessing. Another well-written mystery that is truly engrossing and hard to put down.

This book kept my interest all the way through. I felt the characters were believable and I enjoyed the setting of the bookstore and the neighborhood. The cat's character is well done.
