More About This Book

Overview

All year round, retired schoolteacher Phyllis Newsom is as sweet as peach pie-except during the Peach Festival, whose blue ribbon has slipped through Phyllis's fingers more than once...

Everyone's a little shook up when the corpse of a no-good local turns up underneath a car in a local garage. But even as Phyllis engages in some amateur sleuthing, she won't let it distract her from out-baking her rivals and winning the upcoming Peach Festival contest.

She and all the other contestants guard their secret, original recipes with their lives-and talk a whole lot of trash. With her unusual Spicy Peach Cobbler, Phyllis hopes to knock 'em dead. But that's just an expression-never in her wildest dreams did she think her cobbler would actually kill a judge. Now, she's suspected of murder-and she's got to bake this case wide open.

    Love this series!

I started reading this series by reading the most current book. I was so taken I purchased the earlier books in the series. I think the characters are well developed, and I like the way that their story lines are developing as well. I will continue to purchase books in this series.

    Mouthwatering Goodness!

A Peach of a Murder kicks off Livia J. Washburn's mouthwatering Fresh-Baked Mystery series. Yummy!

Let me tell you straight away, you will definitely be on the hunt for a Peach Festival & some heavenly peach-pie piping hot from the oven. Oh, go ahead, toss on a few scoops of ice cream. I'm not Paula Deen so homemade is not necessary for this foodie. Good 'ole Turkey Hill or Blue Bunny does the trick. Crazy good!

I read A Peach of a Murder w/ my faux Texas accent which is actually quite good... thank you JR Ewing!

Livia's description about life in Weatherford, Texas is unbelievable. I wanted to go visit the gritty, broiling Texas climate in search of a Peach Festival. Which is a plus whenever I'm reading any book, but especially a cozy! If the author pulls me off the island & plunks me down into their fictional town it is definitely a winner.

Washburn has an uncommon way w/ words & knows how to create a stirring tale. A Peach of a Murder is a delectable debut. Washburn doesn't toss nonsense into a baking pan & expect it to taste good. It is good because all the ingredients to prepare a well written & interesting story is included in this pungent cozy.

What I thought was impressive was the way Washburn weaved the mystery, showcased the ladies various degrees of friendship, introduced a man in their enclave & touched on a very delicate matter. A Peach of a Murder isn't your standard whodunit, Washburn seasoned it w/ layers of twist & turns.

Washburn showcased her writing chops by encompassing different story lines & crocheting it all together in a delightful bow.

A Peach of a Murder has a terrific cast of characters. Phyllis isn't the only witty character to grace the pages of Washburn's baking debut. I'm not a fan of the Golden Girls... the theme song is torture enough. I just can't get into those biddies, yet I picture Rue McClanahan as Eve. 'Nuff said!

A Peach of a Murder is a zesty start to an engaging series. Phyllis made me ache for my grandma who passed away when I was 8. For me, 23 years is too long to be w/o a grandma & while reading this baked delight she wasn't too far away.

So, what 'cha waiting for? The Peach Festival to pass ya by? Grab a copy of A Peach of a Murder. After all, Weatherford is the Peach Capital of Texas.

I also love the cover. I just wanted to jump in & voilà end up picking peaches @ Newt Bishop's Orchard.

    Psst... I'm a cover tart!

    A terrific mystery

The townsfolk of Weatherford, Texas is getting ready for the annual festival and housemates Phyllis, Mattie and Carolyn are plucking peaches in Newt Bishop¿s Orchard. Phyllis happens to notice that Newt is arguing with another man who turns out to be his own son. When she hears a scream coming from the barn, they see that Newt¿s car fell on top of him. They later learn that it might have been murder instead of an accident.----------------- At the cooking competition, Donnie, an affluent businessman and one of the judges, suddenly keels over it is later discovered that his water jar was laced with arsenic gotten from the laetrile from the peach pits. Suspicion falls on Carolyn because her daughter who worked for Donnie was arrested because he charged her with embezzlement she claim he wanted revenge as she spurned his advances. A high school student commits suicide and one of the teachers is run over in a hit and run. Nobody realizes all these events are linked and when Phyllis discovers who the link is she doesn¿t want to believe it nor do any of the townsfolk.------------- Instead of pining away when her beloved husband died, the heroine opened her home to boarders and now three retired teachers and a widower who recently lost his wife are active in the community and are there for one another. Although Phyllis and Carolyn were competing in the cooking contest, Phyllis starts her own investigation because she is sure her friend is innocent. There are many surprises in this entertaining who done it but when the killer is revealed, nobody can believe that person is the killer. Livia J. Washburn has a refreshing way with words and knows how to tell an exciting story.------------------- Harriet Klausner

    Highly recommend

This juicy peach of a mystery was great. I loved that the amateur detective is a retired school teacher. On my Barnes and Noble wish list I added the other books in this series.

I actually started with this author with book #6 in this series of Fresh-
Baked Mysteries and after reading that one just had to go back and get the first 5 in the series. In some respects, her heroine brought back to mind the Nancy Drew ones I grew up with--and by the way, still enjoy reading, only the main character now is more my age and I can just see the wheels turning in her head as she thinks things through.

No reflection on author or novel, but B&N

I'm looking at this series and the title I clicked on says one thing and the thumbnail of the cover says another. Now is this any way to market an ebook? I won't purchase it until I know what book I'm getting.

    Would like to read this...but...

I would really love to see this come out on ebook! Why would you put the rest of the series on ebook, but not Book #1? Puhhhleeeeze put this on ebook so I can read it on my Nook! It looks enticing, but I'm trying not to purchase paperback copies anymore due to storage space issues! Thanks!

    Hi Y'all

My daughter loves mysteries, she's ten years old. I snuck onto her account to ask a question. Barnes and Noble said that this book was for children? Is that true? With the holidays comming up, I want to get her something nice. I appreciate your help! Thanks

    Peach Lover Heads Home

Having grown up in Weatherford, TX, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and I don't normally read fiction. Washburn vividly portrays the townfolk to a T. Worth the read, especially if you are from or know the area. Well done!
