    Another good read

I wish this book had been longer because I liked the characters so much. Josey is a wonderful heroine, and Nate is the perfect mix of vulnerability and strength. I hope Nate's brother Derek is in a book soon too.

    Perfectly Enjoyable

I must confess right at the start that I am not a Silhouette romance fan. I bought this book for the wackiest reason; it was recommended by the publisher of a book Jen Safrey wrote a couple of years ago called First Night. With A Perfect Pair, I am pleased to report that the flair and spunk I liked so much in Ms. Safrey's story in First Night is evident in her first Silhouette book. A Perfect Pair tells the story of lawyer Nate Bennington, a man whose hurtful past makes it hard for him to bring someone into his life in the present. That someone he's trying to resist is Josey, the sweet and vivacious woman who lives above him. Josey is perfect for Nate, whether he wants to see it is another matter. One of my favorite parts of the book is when Josey enlists Nate's help in trying to find her perfect mate. This is a great book, but I think I was predisposed to liking it because of how much I've enjoyed Ms. Safrey's other books. My only complaint about this book is that it seems like Ms. Safrey held herself back to fit Silhouette's style. Her other books have more punch. Ms. Safrey gets better with each book.

    A Perfect Debut

In a A Perfect Pair, schoolteacher Josey St. John is hit by the urge to have children of her own. While plenty of good men are out there, her best friend, attorney Nate Bennington, would be her perfect match if he could only free himself from the grip of his troubled past. A Perfect Pair does something that no other Silhouette or Harlequin title has ever done for me. It made me believe in the romance. Author Jen Safrey has crafted an illuminating, charming romance that manages to tackle dark and challenging situations to which us real folks in the world can very easily relate. Of particular note is the skillful and unaffected way Safrey develops Josey and Nate's characters while building their relationship. With the savvy intelligence of a (straight) Will & Grace, Nate and Josey made me laugh, grit my teeth in frustration, and then celebrate their satisfying ending. Romances always have happy endings. The surprise in them is how the happy comes about. Author Safrey has done a masterful job of giving me characters with layers, depth, color, personality and genuine charm while keeping them so achingly real that they stay with you even after the final page is turned. Most romances fall flat or make one ill when the author introduces children. Safrey handles Josey's and Nate's rare scenes with children with a deft and knowing touch that entertains rather than nauseates. The secondary characters add to the story, rather than distract or overwhelm Nate and Josey. However, this reviewer must confess that Derek, Nate's older brother, is unforgettable. That's another one of Safrey's enviable strengths, her ability to create a character such as Derek whose subtle, sexy presence left me craving a book featuring just him. I very highly recommend A Perfect Pair to readers in search of the perfect romance.
