Overview

Produced by the modern master of New York salsa, Sergio George, A PESAR DE TODO doesn't just swing, it simply rocks; it doesn't hurt that Manuelle, from Puerto Rico, is both a gifted improviser and a roughhouse singer. The record, released in 1997, is full of humor; on one overly sentimental tune, Manuelle jokingly starts to cry, until the deeply swinging tumbao takes the tune into the land of ecstasy. Recorded virtually live in the studio, the music just jumps off the disc, driving and explosive. Each tune takes its time to get there, but when it does, duck. Those who lament the purported passing of Latin music's golden age haven't been listening: Manuelle is one of the saving graces of modern New York and Puerto Rican salsa.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - José A. Estévez
In his fourth Sony Latin release, Victor Manuelle continues with the Sergio George styling that granted him much greater commercial success than his earlier two solo efforts. It seems that George's pushy, bombastic writing challenges Manuelle's improvising ability to a greater extent, thus giving the production a live, unconfined feel. Omar Alfanno's "Dile a Ella" is a tune that bristles with uninhibited energy. "Dile a Ella," the self-penned "He Tratado," and "El Aguila" are exercises of contumacious swing in every way; among other delights, "Nuestra Historia" is a juicy, astute mix of the usual George sound and the son montuno genre. A must for late-'90s salsa fans, and one that continued to solidify Manuelle's position as a favorite in later salsa generations.
