Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Conceived, designed, written and illustrated by David Pelham, this delightful pop-up book is created in the shape of a piece of cake and has an almost unheard of 13 pages of pop-ups. The story is told entirely in verse with the easy sing-song flow young children love to hear and repeat. A large family of Housemouse children are invited to a costume birthday party at Churchmouse Hall and are advised to take along a piece of cake. Because the distance to the party is so far, the mice children put on their costumes and start out the night before, but at stops and visits along the way, they eat up a lot of cake. Small, intricate pop-ups are present on every page in a remarkable array of different actions, but because of the difficulty for small hands in turning the pages of this rather bulky book, it will serve best as a bedtime story book, destined to be requested many times. 2000, Handprint Books, $12.95. Ages 3 to 7. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
