Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Mrs. Large, that peerless pachyderm parent last seen in Five Minutes' Peace , makes a return engagement. This time, she decides that she's just a tad too elephantine (as her baby succinctly puts it, ``Mummy's got wobbly bits''). Accordingly, she dons an enormous orange sweatsuit emblazoned with the word ``FIT'' and puts her reluctant husband and the four little Larges on a diet. There's watercress soup, grated carrots and other unappetizing fare, as well as lots of jogging. Nothing seems to work, however, and the fitness kick is undermined by the arrival of a cake from Granny. None of the Larges can resist its sugary allure, and in a hilarious climax they unwittingly rendezvous in the kitchen for a midnight snack. Murphy's drawings are both delicate and droll (the sight of Mrs. Large tiptoeing determinedly to the kitchen in nightgown and curlers is particularly memorable), and the tale's message--that it's important to love yourself the way you are--will strike a universal chord in readers. Ages 4-8. (Nov.)
Children's Literature - Marilyn Thomas
In this story about the Large Family, Mrs. Large decides that she is fat and wants the whole family to go on a diet and exercise so that they all can become fit. Her approach is to get jogging around the park and eating healthy food. A package arrives with a cake from Granny and Mrs. Large puts the package in the cupboard. The whole family sneaks to the kitchen to have a piece of cake and even Mrs. Large cannot stay away from the cake. At the end of the story, Mrs. Large decides that thin elephants are not in-elephants are supposed to be fat.

Meet the Author

Jill Murphy's first story about the Large Family, FIVE MINUTES' PEACE, received the PARENTS Best Book for Babies Award and was declared "painfully funny" by THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW. Three more Large Family titles followed, including A PIECE OF CAKE and A QUIET NIGHT IN. Families around the world seem to recognize more than a bit of themselves in these ebullient and down-to-earth elephants. SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL calls their world "instantly recognizable as true to life," and it's easy to see why!
