Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"In its strong folk flavor, Cooper's work reminds us of Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston...It is a delight to read."
--Alice Walker

"The label 'short' story is a woefully inadequate description of these intensely, explicitly moral tales.  'Parable' is more appropriate.  Cooper's stories are rich in wisdom and insight."
--Belles Lettres

"J. California Cooper is indeed an extraordinary writer...She has the rare quality of a natural storyteller, and her work must carry the highest recommendation.  Definitely a book that's worth reading."
--African Concord (Zimbabwe)

What People are Saying About This

Alice Walker
Her style is deceptively simple and direct, and the veil of tears in which her characters reside is never so deep that a rich chuckle at a foolish person's foolishness cannot be heard.
Ntozake Shange
Her stories, parables, and monologues take flight with truths about being alive, rhythm of folks at ease by the creek and the pool table, songs of love and remorse, syncopated, galloping, and beguilingly genuine.

This book is worth the price even if you read no story other than Couper's '$100 and Nothing.' The narrator's voice enthralls readers with Mary's 'rags to riches' story and how her love for a man changed her life. This is one of my two favorite short stories. My high school freshmen say, 'I love it!' and 'What a great story!' Now if a tale evokes those reactions from ninth grade high school students in an age of computer games and movies, you KNOW it has to be good.

All the stories will keep you focus on the what the characters will do next..It will make you laugh, cry, and even shout for joy. J. California Cooper is a brilliant writer that has captured the Heart and Souls of Families.
