    A daring debut novel

The author crafts an interesting novel on a very sensitive subject and does and excellent job of pulling the reader into the story and showing character growth in subtle ways. Some of the choices the heroine makes are risky and she almost loses her marriage over her 'unmet needs' which, if she asked her husband to meet them, he may have, but since she sought affection elsewhere, it muddied the waters quite a bit. With as much fire as the heroine played with, I'm surprised she didn't get burned. Overall, I'd say this is a very engaging novel. However, I don't feel that it resolved the most important issues by the end, which, if the couple had discussed the issues openly, and applied forgiveness, would have made this a five star rating.

    Uplifting, Thought-provoking, a Beautiful Read

'A Piece of the Sky' is a powerful, beautifully written story about a couple torn apart by infertility and the unexpected detours in their lives that make them question all they thought they ever wanted. Carla, the always-in-control successful plant manager, already has a life enviable by anyone's standards - a dream job, gorgeous home and faithful husband - but she wants a child to make it all complete and is willing to risk everything to make it happen despite her husband's assertion it isn't 'God's will.' Buckman's characters are as flawed and eclectic as any you'll find in an Anne Tyler novel, and her lyrical and poetic prose every bit as soul stirring as novelist Pat Conroy's. Yet Buckman brings such a unique voice and style to this first novel it elevates fiction to a whole new level. It is all at once funny, emotional, inspirational, page-turning, and, before you're halfway through, will have you rethinking and reflecting on your own life views and attitudes. An extraordinary read guaranteed to lift one's heart far beyond 'A Piece of the Sky.'
