Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Seven recipes are presented within a context having to do with pirates. Gangplank Dippers are made with a jar of pizza sauce, shredded cheese and breadsticks. Chocolate Gunpowder begins with crushing chocolate cookies and adding milk, instant pudding mix, and whipped cream. Scurvy Soup combines orange, apple, and lemon juices with yogurt and honey before adding a banana, raspberries, and crushed pineapple. Blackbeard's Breakfast consists of two toaster waffles, peanut butter, and jelly. The book begins with an introduction admonishing kids to wash their hands and a Metric Conversion Chart. Photographs of tools needed (cutting board, measuring cups, rolling pin, etc.) and techniques (draining, mashing, whisking, etc.) help readers get started with the cooking experience. Photographs also accompany each step in preparation. Children old enough to use a microwave can make these recipes independently. Includes a table of contents, a glossary, a bibliography, internet sites, and an index. A good beginning cookbook. Part of the "Simple Recipes for Kids" series. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
