Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
This pocket history series (including also histories of Irish music, literature and Ulster) is an excellent way for anyone to get a good grasp of some aspect of Irish history or culture quickly. The books run about 100 pages each, have handsome covers and a variety of b/w illustrations and/or photographs inside. The authors of all these books write from personal commitments to Ireland and its culture, but their writing from within the tradition is lively and skillful. Despite wearing their hearts on their sleeves, they are not afraid to pull back and make critical judgments too. In this group, the IRA book goes into the most depth; the others allot each quick chapter to a new topic, functioning as mini encyclopedias. The books could use an index or notes and/or bibliography, but they do have chapter titles that can clearly guide readers where they need to go.
