I'm just a little envious of Heather's Blake real life friends, because she must be a real kick to hang around. I mean anyone who can make up characters like Carly Bell Hartwell, her over-the-top quirky family, hunky ex-fiance' cop, and her married to the town minister best friend, must be able to find the fun no matter what the circumstances. Carly is the owner of a magic potion shop in Hitching Post, Alabama. When Carly find a local lawyer dead on the floor of her shop, clutching one of her potion bottles, she goes from being a popular town healer to suspect number one in the minds of the town folk. As she works her way through all the clues and suspects, she finds that she may not be over the broken engagement and that Dylan may be back in town to take up where they left off. Heather Blake (aka Heather Webber) is one of my favorite cozy mystery writers. I'm pretty sure I've read all her books; starting with Nina Quinn, landscaper extraordinaire (admittedly my favorite), Lucy Valentine, matchmaker and finder of lost objects (and people), and Darcy Merriweather, with her newly discovered talent of wishcrafting. They are all well written and you just never know who the culprit is until Heather is wrapping up the story. The Magic Potion Mysteries are definitely going on my TBR list and if you like cozies, you're going to love Heather.

There's a witch hunt in Hitching Post, Alabama and Carly Hartwell is the witch they are after.  She always seems to be at the mercy of the townsfolk when Mr. Dunwoody makes one of his predictions.  Carly was use to the crowd, however she was not ready for the dead body she found.  Living in this small town, she of course knew the dead person.   Now to find out why the dead body was clutching one of her potion bottles.      A bit of magic, lots of mystery, a smidgen of fun and some good ole fashioned southern charm are what make this book fantastic!  Colorful characters and a well written story pick you up and hang on to you until the end.  For me, this was like old home week in book form. *smile*  Ms Blake is one of the best mystery writers out there today.  I highly recommend this book.       I found no issues.      I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because of it's attention-grabbing ability.    k ~Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~

Heather Blake has written an extremely fun and likeable cozy.  It has a charming heroine and a quirky supporting cast of characters, including the town of Hitching Post with quickie weddings as its main source of income.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward  to visiting Carly and Hitching Post again.  This is the beginning of a wonderful new series!

A Very Fun Diversion. I completely enjoyed Blake's 'Wishcrafter' books but I like these characters, and this book, far more. While this breaks no literary ground, the writing is generally fast paced with really appealing characters. The interplay between Carly and Delia is especially fun. While some the plotting and language is repetitive at times (the text could use some trimming) I am anxious for the next book in this series. This was a fun, engaging, diversion for a cold/rainy afternoon.

OK...I don't know how she does it...with three series with paranormal elements, maybe she's got some witchy blood in her veins.  All I can say is that Heather Blake (Webber) just keeps getting better! Hitching Post, Alabams is a small town known for its wedding chapels, quickie marriages (and divorces) and some interesting shops.  Carly Hartwell owns the Little Shop of Potions, having inherited the "special secret ingredient" handed down in her family.  Her shop specializes in potions to help people, whether with their health or love life.   All positive, right?  Until the day Carly walks into her shop to find a local lawyer dead, with one of her potion bottles in his lifeless hand.  The day gets even better when the local cop investigating the death is Carly's ex (after two disastrous attempts at a wedding) Dylan, who still has the ability to make her pulse rate rise. Soon after, another near death involving one of Carly's potion bottles has the locals looking at her suspiciously and staying away from her shop.  Carly wants to clear her name and keep her business so she starts asking questions around town. Throw in her crazy family (cousin Delia who deals in the family "dark magic", three interesting aunts, a mother who has a wedding chapel and is determined to pull business from her arch-rival), her attraction to Dylan, and a local coach who has never forgiven her for turning him in years ago for some peeping during gym class...well, it's quite the cast of characters. It's a great ride and I made myself slow down my reading because I didn't want it to end.  I'm really looking forward to book 2!

First thoughts after... I'm so ready for more Dylan! How distracted did I get? A Potion To Die For is a must read for all mystery lovers!  Heather Blake has created a fun new world I can't wait to visit again.   I do love quirky cozy mysteries and this is one of my tops!  Carly is fun and sarcastic and I'd love her as a bff!   And Dylan...who doesn't love a hot cop?  LOL  I can't wait to learn more of both Carly and Dylan together and separate.   Aunt Marjie I have to say is my fave secondary character and can't wait to see what she is up to next!   A Potion To Die For is a wonderful start to a new series I'm already addicted to and am dying for more!   A copy of this book was provided by the author for an honest review.

I'm quite a fan of the other books by this author and couldn't wait for this new series to come available. While being a fun cozy mystery, it was also charming and pretty upbeat for a murder mystery. I love the different characters who are just as delightful as those from the Wishcraft series and the many twists in those story really kept me thinking the entire time. It was truly hard to not devour this book quickly and to enjoy it over several days. For me that's the true sign of a successful book.

This was my introduction to Blake's witchy novels. In this increasingly popular sub-genre of fantasy literature, Heather Blake is an established master. Having an academic background in magical folklore, and having now spent over five decades in the American South, I have a qualified perspective on the what's, how's and why's addressed in this, and similar, works. Author Blake blends nuanced humor with solid experience to capture the themes, people and places in her tales. I give her Southern witch debut an unreserved recommendation. This is one of the few modern novels I'll enjoy reading again. - Greg Edmonds, Ars Praestigium: The Magic Art Shop

If you're looking for a fun, fast read you need look no further. A Potion to Die For by Heather Blake The First Magic Potion Mystery A Potion to Die For is a fun read that kept me up way past my bedtime, even though I had to get up early! Heather Blake writes a fast paced story for this, the first in the Magic Potions Mystery series. It starts with a mob chasing Carly Bell Hartwell, careens through various wacky characters, includes two wild car rides, and ends with me pushing on to finish as I had to know the ending. The characters are fresh and funny, but there is a depth to these characters as well. I want to know more about them. A perfect example is Delia. When she first made the scene I thought, "OK, here's the nasty character that's going to make all sorts of trouble and is going to annoy me". Delia may be dark to Carly's light, she may cause problems, but I like her. There's a lot more to her than the stereotypical nemesis and even Carly comes to that realization. Plus, Delia has Boo! If you're looking for a fun, fast read you need look no further. A Potion to Die For is perfect for whatever ails you!

Interesting new series.  I love all of her other books, it took me a few tries to get into this series. I started it about three different times before it pulled me in.  I thought it was a tony but predictable, but it has potential.
