This text provides the reader with a "user friendly" environment in which to approach the subject of biomechanics without the excessive use of complex mathematics and complicated mechanical principles. Additionally, the text provides an applicable and practical approach to biomechanics as it relates specifically to orthopedic medicine. This book differs from classic engineering textbooks that tend to focus on biomechanics using a very complex mathematical approach. Instead, a basic algebraic approach is used to present concepts and constructs, which is sufficient for the orthopedic professional. The authors do a good job of presenting the material in a relatively unique manner. According to the authors, and in my opinion, the audience for this book consists of orthopedic medical students, orthopedic residents, and practicing orthopedic physicians. At the beginning of each chapter, a clinical scenario is presented that poses a problem that is to be solved throughout the chapter. Relevant information is presented in each chapter in a progressive order to help the reader fully understand the initial problem and how to arrive at a possible solution. Each chapter concludes with a recap of the scenario along with the authors' solution to the original problem. This type of approach is very practical; it gives the reader a chance to apply the material, which may lead to better comprehension. Additionally, the book contains a glossary of important terms related to biomechanics and strength of materials which are vital in the orthopedic profession. The authors do not hesitate to add a bit of humor to their presentation style to help keep the readers' attention. In my opinion, thisis an excellent reference, useful for anyone interested in the field of biomechanics and how it relates specifically to orthopedics.
