Overview

A Primer on Prostate Cancer: The Empowered Patient’s Guide (2nd Edition) was written for every patient who has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. This up-to-date, unbiased resource outlines a strategy of disease management designed to help patients, their loved ones, and their doctors optimize outcomes. This second edition is updated to provide a current, comprehensive and unbiased resource for prostate cancer patients, caregivers, partners and physicians.

The Primer incorporates the unique perspectives of both a renowned medical oncologist who has decades of experience specializing in treating prostate cancer, and of a prostate cancer activist who contributes her insights into the fears and concerns of the patient and who understands and anticipates the questions patients don’t think to ask. Co-authors are Dr. Stephen Strum, a board certified medical oncologist and co-founder of the Prostate Cancer Research Institute, and Donna Pogliano, the partner of a warrior in the battle against prostate cancer and an award winning prostate cancer activist. Together, they address the issues and realities encountered by men and women touched by prostate cancer. Many of the suggestions for topics in the Primer came from men who have experienced prostate cancer and from their partners.

Comprehensive and thorough, the Primer covers the basics of prostate cancer, proper diagnostic and testing procedures, disease management options and a discussion of treatments on the horizon. Between the covers of this 368-page reader-friendly full-color book loaded with graphics, complete with case studies, chapter summaries, notes sections, glossary, index, full references and a resource section, the reader will find the vital information that those who have experienced prostate cancer consider indispensable. Armed with this information, the prostate cancer warrior will possess the ammunition to become empowered and actively involved in intelligently managing his own care.

Dr. Stephen B. Strum began his medical oncology practice in 1973. He collaborated with Dr. Fernand Labrie in 1983 on the use of combined androgen blockade in the treatment of prostate cancer-six years prior to FDA approval of Eulexin (flutamide) and Lupron (leoprolide). As a result of this pioneering work, his entire oncology practice was soon focused solely on prostate cancer.

It is imperative to have a chance at surviving prostate cancer that a patient become informed and stay informed. Fighting cancer is like a battle. It must be fought tactically (what is my current treatment?) and strategically (what will I do if it progresses and how do I monitor it to tell if it does?). This is the ONE BOOK that has treated both aspects and does it in such a way as to communicate both to the prostate cancer survivor as well as to his doctor(s). Numerous references to the literature are included for the inquiring patient or doctor for follow-up. If you are dealing with prostate cancer in your life, or know someone who is, this book can easily be a life saver! I am very active managing my prostate cancer treatment and find I repeatedly use this book as my primary written guide and reference book. I highly recommend it to the prostate patient who wishes to take an active role in his treatment.

'A Primer on Prostate Cancer: The Empowered Patient's Guide' provides excellent insight into answering the many questions of the newly diagnosed or recurring Prostate Cancer patient. We recommend its review and strongly recommend that every Prostate Cancer patient purchase the 'Primer' not only for himself but for his physician as likely the most authoritative and informative book available that explains the many aspects of Prostate Cancer treatment in medical terms that can be understood by both the layman patient and his attending physician. Dr. Strum and Donna Pogliano have provided us the procedures being practiced by those who specialize specifically in Prostate Cancer research and treatment and who are far ahead of their contemporaries in recognizing and understanding the latest innovations in Prostate Cancer therapy. I am a prostate cancer survivor of eleven years, and have read almost every book I can find on this subject. This is the most informative, comprehensive, and easy to understand of them all. It is in a class by itself. I tell my fellow prostate cancer patients, both newly diagnosed and experienced, 'Throw away any other books on prostate cancer you may have. This is all you need.'

Most comprenhensive book I have seen available. In depth with referrences and information on various modalities for treatment options. Non biased in informative education on the whole subject matter. This is 'The' book you definitely should have to consult and help empower you on the journey you are facing.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, January 2004. My urologist told me to 'get informed on your disease' and gave me the titles of a couple of books he recommended. 'A Primer on Prostate Cancer: The Empowered Patient's Guide ' was not one on his list. - It should have been! The 'key' to this book is found on page 72 where the authors outline an approach to achieve the best outcome for any prostate cancer patient. This paragraph alone is worth the price of the book! 'The Primer' is a 'must read' book for the newly diagnosed or post-treatment patient! It will remain as a reference work as I help others become 'empowered patients' as the authors of this excellent guide have helped me to become.I recommend this book without reservation.

For the man who is newly diagnosed with prostate cancer, or his wife/partner, this is THE book to read first. It is thorough, well illustrated and explains the ins and outs of prostate cancer in terms that are easily understandable for the non-medical person. It deals with diagnosis and the risks/benefits of the various treatment modalities. Nothing is left unsaid. Buy two copies, one to keep and one for your doctor.

The book contains the most current and relevant information to help the prostate cancer patient make well informed decisions to help get the best of medical care. It is well illustrated with many easy to follow diagrams and charts. In this book are found the nuts and bolts of what the patient needs to steer the course of his illness and ensure a safe passage. I¿ve read most of the books for the prostate cancer patient and this one certainly tops the list. Howard Waage Facilitator-Santa Cruz Prostate Cancer Support Group

I work with men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and always recommend the Primer as the first book to read on this complex subject. The authors have deep and broad knowledge of the subject, and present it well. A useful and important book.

Dr. Stephen Strum and Donna Pogliano have written an excellent book, now in it's second edition, that will guide both patients and physician alike to optimal care in the treatment of prostate cancer. Easy to read and understand, color-coded for quick reference, basic and advanced information depending on the readers interest. It's all there. I use it as my prostate cancer bible and even carry it with me to prostate cancer support group meetings.

As a prostate cancer survivor with recurring disease of fourteen years I have read published studies, newsletters, books, and participated in support groups plus cancer mail lists on the net. The Primer is written by one of the main medical-oncologists in the world in collaboration with a prostate cancer knowledgeable, talented writer. I find the organization, material and illustrations the best I have seen anywhere. This book is a reference work and is used by me and many other patents almost daily. The new edition is an upgrade needed because of advances made in treatment since it was first published. Even so, the first edition is still continuing to help so many folks who need a reliable, accessable source of information on this disease that claims so many lives and negatively effects quality of life for many more.

The Primer is the first step in any man's education on prostate cancer. It's accurate, concise and informative content is a valuable tool in making individual decisions on how to deal and manage the disease, while maintain a quality of life for the patient and his family. The disease is a progression of steps and the first step is to read the Primer and then start asking questions.

The Prostate Primer is without doubt a very valuable source of knowledge for any man diagnosed with prostate cancer who wishes to gain some measure of control and understanding of his options for treatment and survival. If it had been available when I was diagnosed eight and a half years ago it would have saved me a many of the hours I spent in searching through the countless thousands of websites for the information I needed so desperately. As the authors say, this is no novel to be picked up a read in one session. It is a serious work to deal with a potentially dangerous disease. To the newly diagnosed man it may seem overwhelming, but anyone who is earnest in his desire to learn more will soon find that the book strikes a good balance in dealing with technical information in a way that can be understood by a lay person. All men diagnosed with prostate cancer should be given this book, which should also be read by their loved ones and supporters. It gives them an incalculable chance to improve the outcome of their diagnosis.

You MUST get this book!!! It is, without a doubt, the MOST informative, MOST comprehensive, MOST helpful book you will find on the subject of Prostate Cancer on the market. I've purchased several copies of the original book and loan them out regularly. So many men and their partners are in desperate NEED of the information the authors share with us for their very SURVIVAL!! This is a MUST READ for ALL Prostate Cancer patients and/or their partners. We were diagnosed with Stage IV (end stage)cancer and given 2 years... at best. That was from one of the foremost cancer treatment centers in this country. We're now enjoying our SEVENTH year of survival. Thank you, Ms. Pogliano. Thank you, Dr. Strum. Those words seems so little to offer in light of such a magnamous gift but... I'm not certain how one finds the 'appropriate' words to express the feelings of gratitude for giving us another chance at life!!! I remain eternally grateful to you both for sharing your unbelievable knowledge in a clear, concise manner that can be understood by a lay person. With love, GREAT respect, and appreciation, LaVonda Hurlbut

This book does an outstanding job of covering the treatment options for prostate cancer. It is a particularly good place to start for a newly diagnosed man (or his wife or family members) in learning about the disease. The clear readable presentation and excellent color illustrations set this book above others on the same subject. It should be required reading for the newly diagnosed man.

I was so lucky to have Prostate Cancer diagnosed shortly after this book came out. How different it could have been if decisions were/are being made with out it. I have only be diagnosed for a few days now, but will try to take baby steps, as advised by authors, to make my best choices. I was very lucky to read 'PCa for Dummies' first ,followed by others including Walsh's. Prostate Cancer is really Greek in some ways and in so many areas, but I think one has to read the 'Primer' selectively for specific questions or information as they pop up. A basic non-threatening book; e.g., the 'Dummy' book wasn't nearly as great as the 'Primer,' but it made reading this book easier and truly meaningful. I can only suggest that it be available in hardback, since I am sure it will wear out while I keep going back to it and showing it to others, including my doctors. One immediate benefit was the fact that the doctor wanted to give me some hormone therapy in the wrong order. Such a mistake could make my cancer grow even faster! In some ways, I don't think I have a lot of time to look for answers, but I am now convinced that I will have made the best choices that I can. I hope this book becomes the true 'bible' of those of us who live with, but not necessarily die from Prostate Cancer.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer, January 2004. My urologist told me to 'get informed on your disease' and gave me the titles of a couple of books he recommended. 'A Primer on Prostate Cancer: The Empowered Patient's Guide ' was not one on his list. - It should have been! A fellow prostate cancer patient loaned me his copy. I have my own now. 'The Primer' is a classic! Before reading 'The Primer' I ordered 'The Prostate' by Dr. Patrick Walsh and Janet Worthington - a good, but out of date book, especially when discussing Cryosurgery with only 2 pages devoted to the procedure. In contrast, 'The Primer' explains Cryosurgery in great and up-to-date detail. It devotes 7 full pages with excellent color diagrams to Cryo - an often neglected treatment option. I also read 'Prostate & Cancer'(Revised Edition) by Dr. Sheldon Marks. This is a much more basic guide in a Q&A format. Once again it is dated and brief as to Cryotherapy as a treatment option. I found 'The Primer' to be through on all treatment strategies without being too technical. It is 'accurate and balanced'. Current testing procedures, treatment options, and data are presented in a easy to access and understand format! The blue, green red color coding of sentences of special importance make the book easy to 'skim' for key information and guidance. The physician notes are invaluable sources of 'real patient' information. This makes the book personal and 'alive' with actual patient histories. There are other helps on the various treatment strategies but the 'key' to this book is found on page 72 where the authors outline an approach to achieve the best outcome for any prostate cancer patient. This paragraph alone is worth the price of the book! I hope the authors will keep 'The Primer' current with a 'revised edition' in about 5 years! 'The Primer' is a 'must read' book for the newly diagnosed or post-treatment patient! It will remain as a reference work as I help others become 'empowered patients' as the authors of this excellent guide have helped me to become. Thanks, Dr. Strum and Donna Pogliano. Your book has/will help thousands of men! We are grateful. I recommend this book without reservation.

There are some good books on the subject matter out there. This one is in a different league and has more answers and content than any others I have seen. I have been using internet, newsletters and books to learn as much as possible....this book trumps them all, my only regret is not buying it sooner. Ask others who have read it or seen it.

This book is full of helpful information, illustrations and references. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand prostate cancer. I've found it especially valuable on diagnosis and testing.

To our readers, in celebration of the Primer's first anniversary: I found this study done recently in Ireland and I felt it was important enough to share with you. Citation: European Journal of Cancer Supplements; Vol. 1, No. 5, September 2003, page S334. U. Courtney; ARC Cancer Support Centre, Dublin, Ireland. 'Patients react to a cancer diagnosis with a variety of emotions including shock, anger, guilt, denial, anxiety and depression.' (SNIP) 'Information is a basic form of support. Correct and adequate information is essential to helping patient and family adapt to a diagnosis of cancer and develop coping skills. Studies suggest that patients who receive good information are more satisfied with their care and demonstrate lowered levels of anxiety and depression.' When I started the Primer project in March, 2000, I wanted to offer support to prostate cancer patients that goes beyond sympathy. I hope that you find what you need in our book, both in terms of reliable information, and in terms of giving you the confidence that you need that the decisions that you are making are the right ones for you. This confidence is essential to achieving not only triumph over the physical aspects of the disease, but also to finding the emotional comfort that you will need to sustain you in the months and years after treatment for prostate cancer, and indeed, that you will need to have for the rest of your life in order to be healed of your disease in body, mind and spirit. The study quoted above underscores the role of good information in coping with a diagnosis of cancer. In the Primer, Dr. Strum and I have tried to outline a strategy of disease management that is designed to optimize outcomes for the patient and his loved ones. It is our hope that our book will help patients to become empowered, to take responsibility for and authority over their own outcomes based on education and knowledge of the consequences and contingencies involved in their own disease management decisions, and that this focus will provide the uplifting energy that will sustain them in the face of crisis. We wish you low PSA's and may your days be good and long upon the earth. Donna

Whether you are a "newbe" or a survivor, you will find much useful information in this outstanding book! As a soon-to-be one year survivor, I can well remember the time spent in an agonizing search for answers to questions about diagnosis, and finding the right treatment and facility for me. The answers are all in this book! There are answers to questions you haven't even thought of yet! The color illustrations are supurb and the information accompanying them are outstanding. I can, as a retired teacher with some 38 years of experience in the classroom, apppreciate the format of this book. At the end of each chapter there is a page called, "What You Should Have Learned From This Chapter" which gives a thumbnail review of its contents. Also much appreciated are the blank spaces for taking notes that are provided throughout the book. This is a real winner; I would rate it 6 stars if I could.

"A Primer on Prostate Cancer, The Empowered Patient's Guide" is really just what is says. It is the only book written with the patient as the beneficiary. It paints a realistic picture of what decisions the patient has to make and what the possible outcome will be. It is a book that explains what the Doctor has told me. Prostate cancer and it's many medical procedures to cure or control it is very complex. The book helps explain the complexities in understandable language. This book has helped me and many of my friends

It's a basic education on prostate cancer, primarily, but also goes beyond just the basics, for those who want/need to know more. Well written, truly informative, comprehensive, and covers 'everything you ever wanted to know about prostate cancer but were afraid to ask'! Sincerely, Jim K...Prostate Cancer Survivor
