Catalia "Cat" Fisa lives disguised as a soothsayer in a traveling circus. She is perfectly content avoiding the danger and destiny the Gods-and her homicidal mother-have saddled her with. That is, until Griffin, an ambitious warlord from the magic-deprived south, fixes her with his steely gaze and upsets her illusion of safety forever.

Griffin knows Cat is the Kingmaker, the woman who divines the truth through lies. He wants her as a powerful weapon for his newly conquered realm-until he realizes he wants her for much more than her magic. Cat fights him at every turn, but Griffin's fairness, loyalty, and smoldering advances make him increasingly hard to resist and leave her wondering if life really does have to be short, and lived alone.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Debut author Bouchet makes a very strong start to her Kingmaker Chronicles, combining a richly developed political landscape defined by the influence of powerful ruling families, meddling gods, and destiny with a broad exploration of the relationship between might and magic in a social context. In a fantasy world where access to magical power is tied to geography and bloodline, Warlord Griffin, second in command of kingdom Sinta, is guided by a oracular dream from Poseidon to soothsayer Catalia Fisa, who’s hiding in a traveling circus from her family history and her magical role as Kingmaker. Griffin hopes to use Cat as a tool in his challenge of the status quo, in which the minority Magoi rule the hoi polloi. Their smoldering erotic burn hits charged love/hate buttons without falling too far into glorifying Griffin’s abduction of Cat, and by the end of the novel, they become a powerful team well situated for the fights ahead. Bouchet writes believable camaraderie, dramatic fight scenes, and moving personal angst, but worldbuilding purists will hate the insertion of the Greek gods into this secondary-world fantasy context. From the Publisher
"High fantasy is a rare find in romance - complex world-building and political machinations can get in the way of a central, essential love story - but Bouchet skillfully melds the genres while crafting a sexy, emotional romance. Griffin and Cat are beautifully matched - together, her magic and his might make for a sparkling read." - The Washington Post

"Debut author Bouchet tells a swashbuckling tale through Cat's irreverent, diffident, yet still somehow buoyant first-person point of view; this is an exquisite high-fantasy romance with masterful worldbuilding based on Greek mythology. An exciting fantasy/romance debut: action-packed, emotionally charged, and skillfully plotted." - Kirkus Starred Review

"Give this to your Game of Thrones fans. They will love the political plays, the dragons, and the adventure. Bouchet is a debut author to watch." - Booklist Starred Review

"I can say, without a doubt, that A Promise of Fire is going on my keeper shelf. I want more of these characters and I want more of this world. I cannot remember the last time I wanted to both savor and devour a book, and Bouchet's writing is so engaging and magical that I wish she had some sort of backlist I could dive into for the next few months. If you're even slightly tempted by this review or from the chapter one excerpt, buy this book. " - Smart Bitches, Trashy Books

You won't be disappointed, unless you feel the wait is too long for book two! The Kingmaker Chronicles is sure to be a huge hit and well-worth the praise-worthy buzz it's already getting far and wide." - Romance Junkies

"Really great start to the series. There is a solid HEA, although the big conflict with people in the realm who want to hurt Cat and Griffin is not over yet — Breath of Fire and Heart on Fire release next year. A-" - Smexy Books

When Cat, a mysterious circus soothsayer, is captured by Griffin, a wily warlord who recently won his kingdom's crown, she's disarmed by his strength, honor, and integrity, but she's afraid that tying her heart to his can only bring weakness and complications.Cat has spent years in a circus, hiding from her past and avoiding the destiny that's been ordained by an Oracle, until Griffin discovers her ability to know when people are lying and forces her to return with him to his kingdom. At first he's determined to use her as a weapon to help his family, which has recently taken the throne, but soon Griffin realizes that beneath Cat's prickly personality lies a loyal heart and a font of magic unlike anything he's ever seen—possibly unlike anything anyone has ever seen. Sexual and emotional tension crackles as they and their small band of warriors fight to get back to Griffin's kingdom, with Cat pledging her grudging allegiance after they're attacked by such a variety of enemies that it's hard to tell who's after Griffin and who's after Cat. Griffin is tired of magical royalty and nobility who look down their noses at their nonmagical subjects and ruin their kingdoms through selfish greed, and he's intrigued by his soothsayer, who clearly has noble breeding but has turned her back on her own past. She isn't giving any secrets away, but as clues trickle out, it becomes clear that someone out there wants to take her alive and that the power Griffin has seen may be nothing compared to what she's capable of, yet fighting her feelings—for Griffin, his team, his family—becomes almost as hard as hiding her magic. Debut author Bouchet tells a swashbuckling tale through Cat's irreverent, diffident, yet still somehow buoyant first-person point of view; this is an exquisite high-fantasy romance with masterful worldbuilding based on Greek mythology. An exciting fantasy/romance debut: action-packed, emotionally charged, and skillfully plotted.

Got this book on Nalini Singh's recommendation and couldn't be more pleased. Great book. Can't wait for book number 2 in the series.

I was recommended this book from a friend and she was right. It was awesome. I read it in three days, but it only took that long because I had to work. It captured my attention and brought me into a new and creative world full of magic, god's, mythical creatures and powerful characters. I already pre-ordered the second novel. My only disappointment is that I have to wait until January to read it!

Amazingly worth the read

This was an interesting take on mythology. I don't usually like first person narrative but this was done very well. The action was plentiful and the dialog was witty. The romance part was slow to fully build but it fit.

A wonderfully imaginative epic romantic fantasy that will keep readers spellbound! “I conquered a kingdom and found a treasure." His voice turns gravelly, low. "I won't let you go. Not now. Not ever.” A PROMISE OF FIRE by Amanda Bouchet is the captivating first installment in her Kingmaker Chronicles trilogy. It is 448 pages of pure perfection as it weaves magic, mystery and wonder into an epic romantic fantasy that will keep readers spellbound. It has it all: an AWESOME cover, fearsome dragons, an incredible fairy tale setting, interwoven Greek mythological elements, a fierce and witty heroine, an abundance of sexy hunks including the panty-melting hero, jaw-dropping action sequences and so much more! This is the story of soothsayer Catalia 'Cat' Fisa and powerful warlord Beta Sinta Griffin. Their chemistry was off the chart! As the story opens, we meet Cat as she's preparing for a circus performance. She had fled her homeland eight years ago, fleeing from those who would use and control her. Cat has found a happy refuge in a traveling circus. But, when Griffin abducts her , Cat will be forced to come to terms with her past and rethink her future. The tale is set in Thalyria, a land formed by Zeus for mankind. It was intended to be a kingdom of peace and unity, but has evolved to be anything but. I loved Cat and Griffin. The story of Cat's childhood will break your heart. Supporting characters were great, too, including the rest of Griffin's Beta team, Cat's friends in the circus, Griffin's family and the Greek gods, goddesses and assorted related mythological entities. Conversely, the villains are as despicable as they come. Following please find a few of my favorite quotes from this read: “Never promise things you can't deliver," I whisper. "I can try," he whispers back, and I hate myself because I smile.” --- “Hades, Hera, and Hestia!" Flynn curses, pointing up. "What in the Underworld is that?" "A She-Dragon." Everyone turns to me, and as much as I love having four handsome men gape at me in stupefaction, right now, I could do without.” --- “Griffin leans closer, his voice dropping to a low, suggestive rumble only I can hear. "There are things I could boast about, but I'd rather show than tell.” --- “I want you. I need you. For as many hours as possible, I don't want to think about anything but you.” I can't wait to read the next book, BREATH OF FIRE, set to be published early Jan 2017. The finale, HEART OF FIRE, will also be published next year - in the Fall. I adored this book with its wonderfully imaginative story line endowed with plenty of sarcastic humor and swoon worthy moments. Amanda's writing was riveting from the first page to the last - not once letting up. She is obviously an enormously talented storyteller and has set a high bar for her first book and series opener. Her writing and this series reminds me of C.L. Wilson's magnificent Tairen Soul series. A PROMISE OF FIRE has deservedly received many accolades. A few that caught my eye were that Barnes & Noble made it a recommended read for August 2016; Amazon listed it as one of their best romances in the same month; and The Washington Post included it in their list of best August romances. I would definitely rate it as one of the best books I've read this year. It's earned a place on my keeper shelf and I would enjoy reading it again. If you enjoy epic romantic fantasies, A PROMISE OF FIRE should be on your must-read-soon list! 5 STARS!

This one was a definite winner for me. I found a whole lot to like in this book. I thought that the blend of fantasy and romance was well done. I was sucked into this story right from the story and found the characters, the world, and the overall story to be fascinating. This was a really strong start to a new series. I loved the world that this book was set in right from the start. It started out feeling almost like a historical novel but it was quickly apparent that this was a completely different world. A world full of magic and danger. I couldn't get enough of the magic in this story. I loved how the world building continued throughout the book and by the end I had a really good feel for the entire realm. I loved the characters. Cat was amazing. She had a lot of spunk and I quickly figured out just how brave she really is. She is a clairvoyant but not just any clairvoyant - she is the Kingmaker. She has worked to hide what she is so that she can have control over her own life. It seemed that we learned a little bit more about Cat's powers with every chapter and I thought all of her abilities really made the book more interesting. Griffin was pretty awesome as well. Even though he has the power to be Alpha of his realm, he is happy to let that title fall to his sister while he assumes the role of Beta. He seemed to want to see strong but fair leadership in his realm instead of the usual tyrant ruler. He isn't perfect...I mean he does kind of kidnap Cat and everything. I liked Cat and Griffin together. The always seemed to have respect for each other and a level of trust. I really enjoyed their banter and the the chemistry between them. There were even a few rather steamy scenes that were very well done as well. I liked how they quickly became very protective of each other and how their actions really demonstrated their feelings. I would highly recommend this book to others. It does have a strong romance theme but any reader that enjoys a bit of romance along with their fantasy will enjoy this captivating read. This is the first book by Amanda Bouchet that I have had a chance to read but I am already eager to get my hands on the next on in this series. I received a copy of this book from Sourcebooks Casablanca via NetGalley for the purpose of providing an honest review.

A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet is the 1st book in her new Kingmaker Chronicles series. When I decided to read this book, I thought it sounded promising. I have to say, this was the real thing. I loved this book…it was Fantastic! Amanda Bouchet, welcome to my world of authors I must read. In A Promise of Fire, we meet our heroine, Cat Visa, immediately. She is working at a circus as a soothsayer. Cat has made friends with many of the performers, but no one knows that she has a secret…she is a powerful clairvoyant, who is in hiding. Cat has magical powers that allow her to tell if someone is lying; become invisible; steal magic from others, spit fire, as well as many things she will also learn along the way. While at the circus, she notices someone staring at her, and in a short time, she is kidnapped. Griffin, the Beta Sinta, is our hero and a warlord. He has just taken over a realm, and wants Cat to help him build his land, and bring peace to those surrounding them. But Cat wants no part of this, and is desperate to escape, but is tied to Griffin by an enchanted rope, as they take the long trek home. Griffin’s team of 3 handsome hunks, who make this adventure so much fun. Carver, Kato and Flynn were in awe of Cat, and over time they become her friends. The camaraderie between them was at times hysterical. Cat and Griffin were great together in a hate love relationship that had not only great chemistry, but the banter between them as they fought was so much fun. I so enjoyed reading a book with great characters, exciting, fun story and making me laugh so many times. Well done, Amanda Bouchet. Cat was a great heroine, who was very powerful, independent, strong and fierce at times. She had to learn to allow herself to believe that she can love someone without losing them. The villain in this story is very powerful, and we learn from Cat’s terrible ordeal as a child how bad this villain is. It is this reason why Cat fights to not open heart, so not to get hurt again. The romance between Griffin and Cat was very well done, and I adored them together. Griffin was also a wonderful hero, who was a typical Alpha, strong, independent and bossy. He falls quickly for Cat, and is determined to win her over. Despite his promises to Cat that he will help her fight the enemy and protect her, she fears for his life, as she has lost many people that she loved by this villain. Bouchet does a wonderful job giving us some great secondary characters, especially the Beta team and Griffin’s family, who were open and accepting of Cat. A Promise of Fire is a wonderful new fantasy world building, with magic, fantastic characters, wonderful romance, exciting, action filled and so much fun. I cannot wait for the next book in this series, as this wonderful adventure continues.

Bouchet has created a fantasy with a solidly exciting plot and characters that you love to love (and at times hate). It was a fantastic mix of the everyday and your wildest dreams. My imagination ran wild as the characters travelled through lands and the chemistry of the tale ramped up. Bouchet’s vivid descriptions lend themselves to the in-depth world building that she has woven. There were so many different aspects to this world. It was fascinating and complex. It made the plot even more enjoyable, as I was really able to get into the world as a whole. I absolutely love this mix of fantasy and Greek mythology. It added an extra layer to the tale. Cat and Griffin were a blast to get to know. Griffin’s tough yet caring nature along with his strength and intelligence made him the type of man that you find yourself drooling over in all senses. Cat’s snark and bravery made her easy to like, while her past had me feeling for her. The simultaneous antagonism and chemistry between Griffin and Cat served to heighten the tension and to illustrate the difficult places that they both find themselves in. But Bouchet didn’t stoop with just these two. The rest of the cast was quite well developed and a blast to get to know. They each had a definite role in the story and I felt as if I’d actually met them in person by the end of the novel. This novel was an absolutely breathtaking start to Bouchet’s new series. I know that I can’t wait to see what comes and and I feel that it is a must read for all those who enjoy fantasy romance. Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

***Review posted on The Eater of Books! blog*** A Promise of Fire by Amanda Bouchet Book One of the Kingmaker Chronicles Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca Publication Date: August 2, 2016 Rating: 5 stars Source: eARC from NetGalley ***Warning: this is an adult book, and for the eyes of mature readers*** Summary (from Goodreads): Catalia "Cat" Fisa is a powerful clairvoyant known as the Kingmaker. This smart-mouthed soothsayer has no interest in her powers and would much rather fly under the radar, far from the clutches of her homicidal mother. But when an ambitious warlord captures her, she may not have a choice… Griffin is intent on bringing peace to his newly conquered realm in the magic-deprived south. When he discovers Cat is the Kingmaker, he abducts her. But Cat will do everything in her power to avoid her dangerous destiny and battle her captor at every turn. Although up for the battle, Griffin would prefer for Cat to help his people willingly, and he's ready to do whatever it takes to coax her…even if that means falling in love with her. What I Liked: OH MY GOODNESS HOW I LOVED THIS BOOK! I had a feeling I would enjoy it, but I really really liked it. This is EXACTLY my type of romance novel! Fantasy romance is definitely a favorite of mine, and I'm really excited that Sourcebooks Casablanca's first fantasy romance novel was a real hit for me. Cat has been part of the circus for months, as a soothsayer. She's actually really powerful, able to discern lie from truth, to turn in invisible, and numerous other things, but she is hiding in the circus. Until one day, a warlord finds her, figures out what she is (the Kingmaker), and abducts her. Cat fights him at every turn, even if she's starting to feel some kinship towards the other three warriors with the warlord. Even if she's starting to feel the stirrings of powerful attraction between her and the warlord. Beta Sinta - or Griffin - may need her as the Kingmaker, but he isn't her enemy. Cat realizes that the Sintans are not as cruel as they seem, but Griffin is as stubborn as she is. Gosh I loved this book. It's been so long since I've read a good fantasy romance. If you like this one, try The Winter King by C.L. Wilson. Or if you liked The Winter King, try this book. Both books have AMAZING hate-to-love romances, between two very powerful people. The tone of this book is hilarious! The book is written in first-person, solely via Cat's perspective. Nope, we never get in Griffin's head. Cat's voice is so fun! She is funny, stubborn, spitfire-y, honest, and refreshing. She's extremely clever and strategic, and she's powerful. She wields her magic well. Griffin is a warlord - specifically, Beta Sinta. Beta meaning second, and Sinta being where he is from. The Sintans have recently dominated lots of territory. So Griffin - Beta Sinta - is the second in commend, after his sister, Alpha Sinta. Griffin is equally as stubborn as Cat, equally as intelligent, very fierce and protective and SUCH an alpha. I wish I had my own Griffin. He's very dominant and likes being in control... too bad Cat is basically a female version of him. He is a fiiiiine specimen, that's for sure. I have a visual image of him in my head and holy guacamole! *fans self more* They are seriously perfect together! A Promise of Fire is book one in the Kingmaker Chronicles by Amanda Bouchet. The cover pulled me in and I’m so glad I tried out this book. This was my very first fantasy romance read. I don’t understand why it took me so long to pick up this genre, but I am so glad that my first book in this genre was OUTSTANDING! Amanda Bouchet did a SENSATIONAL job! I was so engrossed, that I lost track of time and when I needed to stop I didn’t want to. A Promise of Fire is loaded full of action, adventure, prophecy, and so much more. We get battles to fight and creatures from myths and legends to slay. Plus our characters have secrets that involve Gods and more. The story is original and the author weaves a complex world with unique characters and a thick plot full of action. The beginning felt a bit slow, but once you get past the first chapter things pick up and move along fast. Catalia was an interesting character. Her past is not pleasant, so she has learned to not let anyone get close and to keep her secrets to herself. But she will learn to open up and start healing. The Warlord Beta Sinta aka Griffin was a very sexy character and I love that he never gives up on Cat. These two still have a long way to go, but things are starting to change. I throughly enjoyed the verbal sparing Cat and Griffin do and how their relationship is developing. All the characters introduced in A Promise of Fire are pretty interesting and likable. This story ended way too soon and left me wanting more. It captivated me and I can’t wait to dive deeper into the Kingmaker Chronicles series. I’m waiting on pins and needles for the next installment. Oh my god!!!! This book...this book!!! I just can't form the words to describe how amazing and fantastic this story is! I have to have the second book, Breath of Fire (Kingmaker Chronicles #2), ASAP! Like, I'm in serious withdrawal and that's not good! Nope, not at all! Something like that has never ever happend before. I recently watched Jesse's vlog and I feel just like him in that video. So judging by that, there are some tough times before me. Like half a year tough times, since the next book doesn't come out till January 2017 and the final book in this trilogy comes out in March 2017, according to Book Depository pre-order. I'm telling you, I'm going to be in agony, waiting, crying and hoping for the book to release sooner. But let's get back to the actual plot. It's just brilliantly done! I loved every second of it and now I obviously want more! There word the author build up is so amazing. You have magic, you have wars, you have historical times and you also have this wonderful journey that you simply have to be part of. I admit that I had this book for a while befire a actually started reading it and what a huge mistake that was! Once I started I couldn't stop! It was like in invisible force that just drew me in and kept me there till it was finished with me. This book is made for fans that like to read fantasy/romance books! It has some adult scenes in it but if you take that out, you have a fantastic YA fantasy book and I would bet fans of Sarah J. Maas and Laini Taylor will love this story! It's seriously that good! Aside from the amazing world, I loved all the characters. No joke! I honestly loved all of them, even the bad guys. Of course Griffin and Cat stole my heart first but the others weren't far behind. Each character has so much personality and that made the story so much more enjoyable. I also love to see the changes in them over the flow of their journey and how they in the end became friends (most of them). And don't even get me started on the plot twists and the BIG secret Cat is keeping from Griffin. I can't wait to see how that plays out! And Cat's mother! I bet that once she makes her appearance heads are going to roll, literally! Oh man, did I mention I can't wait to read the sequel? There is so much going on!!! And my personal favourite, when do we get to see Hades? I know there's something else going on with him and Cat and I can't wait to find out just what exactly that is! This book is such an adventure! It's the world of magic, war and love and we all know that when it comes to those things, there are no rules to be broken! Only the strong and cunning shal survive! Gaaaah, I need the sequel NOW!!! Seriously folks, READ THE BOOK!!! You won't regret it!

Amanda Bouchet A PROMISE OF FIRE is an amazing start to the Kingmaker Chronicles. This adult fantasy was captivating from start to finish. Catalia "Cat" Fisa has been in hiding. She is a rare clairvoyant who only emerges once every two hundred years known as the Kingmaker. She is captured by a warlord, Griffin, who intends to use her talent to help his recently conquered realm of Sinta in the south. I loved this story. Cat is a fantastic and complex heroine. She had a horrible childhood. She is strong mentally and magically. She is a good individual despite her upbringing. Griffin is an honorable warlord. He is a skilled warrior with a talent of his own. Cat and Griffin love to squabble and have great chemistry. The plot was interesting and had lots of twists. The magical versus non-magical issues are fascinating. I love that the Greek gods are part of this story. The story is mysterious and full of action and conspiracy. I cannot wait for book two, BREATH OF FIRE. Complimentary copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
