Overview

Scotland is a land of castles but few have a history as fascinating as that of Carbisdale overlooking the great Sutherland estates. It was the last castle to be built in Scotland (by Mary Caroline Blair, the second wife of the 3rd Duke of Sutherland) and is a magnificent architectural achievement. It was the site of a number of key battles and was headquarters for the Norwegian resistance during World War II. Concealed within its walls is one of the great scandals of the twentieth century, in which one of the richest families in Britain was torn apart by adultery, mysterious deaths, divorce, a will, and a court case. The castle remains today as mute testimony to this extraordinary story.
