Barnes & Noble - Dave Gil de Rubio
Even though the Jessica Simpson-Nick Lachey split was a source of endless tabloid fodder, Simpson's first post-marital release shows the native Texan ready to get on with her life. While in name, the title track evokes her gossip-fueled breakup, musically it recalls Madonna circa 1983, with its mix of darting strings and snappy rhythms, lending the album an inviting dance-pop tone. Unlike Lachey, who poured his broken heart into his sophomore solo album, What's Left of Me, for Simpson, moping is out and fun is in. Aided by hit producers like Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and Scott Storch, A Public Affair is a dance-friendly collection of songs that departs from her familiar mix of power ballads and cutesy pop. Here, the blonde bombshell dabbles with hip-hop on the beat-heavy Storch production "Fired Up"; takes a page out of Christina Aguilera's book on the big-band-flavored "Swing with Me"; and serves up a spot-on cover of Dead or Alive's new wave club classic "You Spin Me Round Like a Record." Simpson even immerses herself in "Push Your Tush," a slice of honky-tonk funk wrapped around the infectious thump of an Ohio Players sample. And while an acoustic reading of Patty Griffin's "Let Him Fly" is a rare moment where Simpson takes it down a notch and reflects on her heartbreak, A Public Affair will stand as one of 2006's best dance-pop albums -- and the high point of Ms. Simpson's recording career to date.

WORST CD IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC

this cd is absolut. the worst of any I have ever heard. When singers remake songs its to make them better not worse. No one should buy this cd, Its for your own good.

    Poorly done

What a waste of money! Jessica's lyrics are really immature and it sounded like she really didnt put in any effort at all! This album should have been released about six years ago and maybe she would finally have a number 1. Looks like shes not cut out for music either.

    WTF???

May i just say that this album sucks!!!! Her windy Madonna wannabe voice just doesn't cut it for good music. Just go back to reality tv jess...after all thats how u got famous in the first place.. she should really stick to her element..which as sad as it is is not singing!!

    Jessica's Awesome Album!

I love this album, the songs sound danceable. When I listen to them I dance myself through them. This is simply the best!

Disappointed with Jessica's Public Affair CD....

The remake "You Spin Me Round" is awful and should have never been remixed. The Car's musical sample does not mix well with her style of music. I was most disappointed in Jessica's singing voice and the vaguely written lyrics. In my view, only one decent song, "Public Affair."

    Not Again!!

This cd is worse than anything else I have heard Jessica do! I am still trying to understand HOW she even can call herself a singer. It sounds like the typical pop album-nothing exciting or orginal about it. I really hope this is the last cd she will put out and the last we will have to put up with!

    What happened?

Jessica's latest album is not up to par. I only liked two songs on the album. The first was "A Public Affair" and the second was "The Lover in Me." A couple of other songs may grow on me but I must say that this was a big disappointment.

    Just another pretty face

I have never really thought that there was much of a lasting quality in her voice. This cd just confirms it. Maybe she should work on becoming an actor or something. Normally as people age their music gets more indepth but it seems like these songs are just fluff that doesn't really matter. I think she seems really sweet and she is very beautiful but it always came across to me that the words were belted out (more of a shouting way too) then sung out. Maybe if her music gets remixed it will sound good.

THE PUBLIC AFFAIR THAT WENT WRONG!

I'm really disappointed in Jessica's Public Affair CD. There is too much distortion in the music. No catchy lyrics. The Dope remake, "You Spin Me Round" sounds better than Jessica's stale version. I think Public Affair is the best song on the CD.

    Awful! I want a refund!

Public Affair is Jessica's worst album to date! She sings in a whining voice, and the high-schoolish lyrics she has written, demonstrates why young girls should graduate from high school and go to college. This album is highly disappointing!

    what was she thinking???

im going to be nice and rate this album a 3. I love Jessica Simpson, don't get me wrong but i did not enjoy one song on this album, I mean she needs to stick to her roots and stick with her old music and this music does not do anything for her talent, it just sounds like Britney Spears on crack! p.s., Jessica PLEASE go back to your roots.

don't listen to the nay sayers....

A Public Affair is one of Jessica's better albums. It goes past her pop roots and she has songs that are obviously a lot about what has been happening to her and what she hopes will happen in the future. I love the cd and am more than happy I bought it.

    Poorly Done

I grew up loving Jessica Simpson--I stopped once she became Daisy Duke. However, I heard "A Public Affair" and I listened to her album at BN.com right away. As much as I think "A Pulbic Affair" is a fun piece of work, I did not like the rest of the albumn. It was great Jessica actually experimented with synstheziors--I giver her props to that, lyrically it is not that bad, but vocally this album is a disgrace to musicans. If she just used her own sweet voice instead of talking and wisphering and computerizing it then this album would have received five stars. In order to have a good album one must have variaty in music and lyrics.

    The album is just OK.

I love Jessica but this is definatly not her best album. There are a few songs that are good and the album is worth getting for those songs.

Not so great....is Jessica only good on remakes?

I am a fan of Jessica's music. "In this Skin" was a better album than a "Public Affair." The only songs that I liked were here remakes (You spin me round and Let Him Fly). I must say I am disappointed. Her voice is over synthesized and the songs are somehow overproduced in the uptempo songs of this album. I hate to do this, but Nick's album, What's left of me is way better in comparison.
