Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Young readers will fall in love with Genie from the moment she magically appears from inside the flea market Lava lamp in Ali's bedroom. No one in Ali's family knows about Genie and it is very hard for Ali to keep her a secret. Genie can disappear with just a snap of the fingers. Genie never was very good at her magic skills and when Ali accidentally wishes for a new bedroom with just a touch of pink, Genie's magic backfires. Ali discovers that everything she touches now turns pink. She turns her curtains pink, her bedspread and even her glass of juice turns pink. Ali has plans to spend the afternoon with her friend, but what will she do, she cannot let her friend find out about her "pink problem." What should she do? Ali and Genie continue their plans to undo the wish. Finally, with a little help from Genie, Ali and everything she turned pink returns to its original color without anyone finding out. Genie and Ali fly on Genie's magic carpet and everything turns right again. This is a "cute" story that young girls will especially love. The black and white illustrations peppered throughout the small, easy-to-hold book add dimension to the characters and enhance the text. 2004, Delacorte Press, Ages 8 to 12.
