Description: This compendium of images has been acquired from a lifetime interest in forensic consultation by the authors. Composed of a variety of forensic topics ranging from child, spouse, and elder abuse to blunt- and sharp-force trauma and terrorist techniques, the atlas is a mix of concise relevant discussion and exemplary illustrations including standard and dental radiographs, multiplanar imaging, patient images, and sketches to demonstrate mechanisms of injury.
Purpose: This is a book about aggression in its many and varied forms. Although the topics are potentially disturbing, this is an excellent review of mechanism of injury and an important reminder of the important role of imaging in identifying potential victims of abuse.
Audience: General surgical pathology residents as well as forensic residents will benefit from this compilation of images. This is also useful for emphasizing mechanism of injury to residents training in radiology and emergency medicine. The authors are well known experts in the radiology and the forensic medicine community.
Features: The atlas covers abuse of children, intimate partners, elders, and of self as well as that inflicted in the name of political or civil agendas. Torture, in the form of beating, electric, stabbing, cutting, as well as other techniques, is covered. Explosives, gas, biologic agents, and poison used in terrorism, as well as gunshot, blunt- and sharp-force trauma are reviewed. Lastly, body identification techniques are reviewed, as is the role of imaging in mass casualty.
Assessment: This is a truly unique imaging atlas. The topic of mechanism of injury is not unique, but the manner of injuries covered in this atlas is and thus this book is without comparison. Dr. Brogdon has written frequently on forensic topics for radiologists, including a book covering some of the topics covered here in more detail but without the volume of images in this book.
