A reader caught up in reading... he wrote in a book
God created man as a reader, so the first word in the Qur'an was revealed in the Cave of Hira: Read, and the first phrase in the Torah: In the beginning was the word. Of course we need books that change our destinies, or as Kafka says, books that bite and prick us, but there is no recipe for direct access to these books. They come across you, and if you cling to books as a friend and teacher, then the most important thing in reading is not pleasure, which exists, and not pleasure. It exists, and entertainment does not exist while it exists. Rather, it is knowledge and absorption in it that makes you forget what is around you and what is inside you, changes you, and defines you. The book is the noblest companion, the most sociable companion, the most sincere friend, and the most guarded companion. Here in this book is a biography of books, but it is an incomplete biography, as the biography of books cannot be completed.
