Overview

Perhaps you've seen ads for THE MOST RELAXING CLASSICAL ALBUM IN THE WORLD...EVER! or similar collections intended to calm jangled nerves. Certainly, Andrew Rangell's RECITAL OF INTIMATE WORKS, VOL. 2 could be employed quite effectively as a soothing balm, despite the occasional vigorous fortissimo. But Rangell's recitals are about creating more profoundly satisfying sensations than mere relaxation. This volume's 14 selections span some 300 years' worth of music, yet for all their stylistic diversity, there's a sense of coherence -- what the pianist calls "an involving and evolving listening experience." Those who know Rangell's idiosyncratic recording of Bach's GOLDBERG VARIATIONS should note that there's nothing quite so unorthodox here. From the gracefulness of Scarlatti to the sensuousness of Scriabin, Rangell's playing is exquisitely restrained. Every chord in Ravel's petite "Minuet on the Name of Haydn" is cherished with tender delicacy. The sweet melody that runs through Brahms's late chorale prelude "A Rose Breaks into Bloom" (transcribed by Rangell from the organ original) is devastatingly wistful. And when have Beethoven's Eleven Bagatelles, Op. 119 been so elegantly sculpted or so seriously droll? Dorian enhances the album's confidential atmosphere with a warm recording that sounds as if Rangell is playing in your living room, not a cavernous concert hall. This is one musical journey you'll want to travel again and again.
