Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Rule is this country's premier true crime author as well as one of its most prolific. She maintains her position with this first volume in a projected five-volume series. This book contains one long piece (a book in itself) and five shorter pieces, all dealing with male killers of women in the Northeast, Rule's home turf. The title piece focuses on a modern-day Bluebeard, Randy Roth, who murdered his second wife for insurance, claiming that her death was a mountaineering accident; tried to murder his third wife; ditched a promising marriage prospect when he discovered her to be uninsurable; and then murdered his fourth wife, this time explaining her death as an accidental drowning. Although there was no hard evidence in any of the cases, the cumulative circumstantial evidence was enough to convict him. Rule's ability to depict both criminals and victims as believable human beings is perfectly embodied in this sad, fascinating account. Indeed, all her accounts present the female victims as real people who deserve compassionate treatment. For all popular true crime collections.-- Ben Harrison, East Orange P.L., N.J.

Meet the Author

Ann Rule
Ann Rule

Ann Rule is a former Seattle policewoman and the author of more than two dozen New York Times bestsellers. She is a certified instructor for police training seminars and lectures frequently to law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and forensic science organizations, including the FBI. For more than two decades, she has been a powerful advocate for victims of violent crime. A graduate of the University of Washington, she holds a Ph.D. in Humane Letters from Willamette University. She lives near Seattle and can be contacted through her website AnnRules.com.

Biography

Ann Rule has always had an insatiable interest in why people do the things they do. From devouring true crime books when she was a girl to pursuing a career in law enforcement as a Seattle policewoman, to achieving blockbuster success as a true crime author, Rule has dedicated her life to uncovering the dark motivations inside the minds of the criminals who live among us.

The majority of Rule's books have hit the New York Times bestseller list, including six Crime Files series volumes: A Rage to Kill, In the Name of Love, the #1 bestseller A Fever in the Heart, You Belong to Me, A Rose for Her Grave, and The End of the Dream.

...And Never Let Her Go is her chilling account of the nationally renowned case of wife killer Thomas Capano; Bitter Harvest covers the case of Debora Green, a physician and mother driven to murder; the #1 bestseller If You Really Loved Me tells the true story of a millionaire's murderous alter ego; Everything She Ever Wanted is the story of a sociopathic Georgia socialite and her fatal attractions; Small Sacrifices is Rule's heartbreaking account of a woman who slaughtered her three young children. Perhaps her best-known and most compelling work, The Stranger Beside Me, is the fascinating tale of Rule's growing terror as she realized her friend and coworker, Ted Bundy, was a serial killer. Finally, the #1 New York Times bestseller Dead by Sunset tells the story of a charismatic killer and the women who loved him.

Generous and civic-minded when it comes to sharing her expertise and insights, Rule has testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee and often speaks to law enforcement agencies, including the FBI Academy. She also served on the U.S. Justice Department task force that set up VI-CAP -- the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program now in use at the FBI to trace and apprehend serial killers.

Good To Know

Rule's early jobs included being a caseworker for the Washington State Department of Public Assistance and a police officer.

Rule's interest in criminology seems to run in the family: Her grandfather and an uncle were sheriffs, another uncle was a medical examiner, and her cousin was a district attorney.

    Rule Rules

Ann always does such thorough research and she doesn't leave anything out. Many other crime writers tend to skip around a lot and leaving you wondering at the whats and whys of things. Ann's writing is like having an 8 course meal - at the end you know you got all you could out of it.

    Hooked On Rule

This was my first Ann Rule book and boy what a way to start. I finished it within a matter of days. I took my book with me wherever I wen. I am now on my way to purchase 4 more to keep me. I am still amazed at the amount of evil there is surrounding us. How innocent women are always being targeted. Ms. Rule takes you into each story as you read. Keep up the good work

Incredible look at dedicated law enforcement...

I found this book in a box of books bought at a garage sale. It was enthralling. I read it in two days. It also shows that sometimes good triumphs over evil - unfortunately it sometimes takes a while. Will definately pick up more of Rule's work.

Good read for true crime lovers and everyone else

The story of Randy Roth and the suspicious deaths of two of his wives is a good read. Roth is a very interesting and unique type of serial murderer. Rule really brings the story of Roth's twisted mind and motives to life, as well as the effect his actions have on the families involved.

    Rule Rules!

This is my first book from Ann Rule. I can't wait to get the full series. She writes true crime with much flair. Knowing that these were her cases makes the book even better. I wish I had more time to devote to reading right now, I truly don't want to put the book down.

    good stories, boring author...

I have just read my 2nd Ann Rule (A rose for her Grave), and I will not read another-even upon reccommendation. Her chosen stories are all interesting and terribly sad, but she is so repetitive it's ridiculous. If I hear the word 'hinky' again, I might snap! I think she used it about 100 times in the story of Robert Roth. I don't reccommend this book at all. I'm more of a John Douglas/Steve Olsen fan.

    Captivating

I have just finished reading 'A Rose For Her Grave' and I am completely stunned at what a wonderful job that Ann Rule had done with this true story. I had to read this book for a class assignment and I very much so enjoyed it. Praise to Ann Rule.
