About the Author

Kate Drumgoold (c. 1856-1920) was an African-American former slave and writer. Born near Petersburg, Virginia, Drumgoold's mother was sold to a buyer in Georgia in 1861. After the end of slavery in 1865, Drumgoold learned to read and write and became a schoolteacher.
