Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Robertson Mason
When two parents decide to get divorced, kids tend to be caught in the middle. They have so many questions but often are not sure who to ask or what to ask them. They are filled with conflicting emotions but do not know how to express them. The author of this book has reached out to those kids. The text covers a range of topics, from why parents separate, to what actually happens in a divorce, to how to deal with living in two separate households. The book is organized into a question and answer format with answers being short and to the point. For some issues, sidebars of other teens' own advice are included. While some questions are answered with stock answers ("try talking to your parents"), most of the advice is exactly what kids are looking for: answers that are honest, practical, and to-the-point. This book is unique because it does not just talk about feelings, it gives kids tips on things like organizing for weekend visits, so nothing is lost. It even gives teens the language they need to tell a parent to stop putting them in the middle. No detail is too small and it is often these small details that cause big problems. This book will not solve all the problems that occur with children and divorce, but it could help with a few of them. Reviewer: Heather Robertson Mason

Gr 3-5

Short chapters illustrated with bright cartoon drawings cover many important concerns and offer explanations of the divorce process. Topics range from how to deal with negative emotions, family changes, and new living arrangements, to tougher issues such as violence and financial troubles. The text has a compassionate tone, and sprinkled throughout are answers to questions that readers might have as well as snippets of advice from girls who have found what works for them. A few write-in quizzes are included. This book promises to be a helpful guide.-Donna Atmur, Los Angeles Public Library

    Highly recommended

I purchased this book because my 9 year old granddaughter asked for it when her parents separated. I read it first. It covers many types of situations a child may encounter when parents divorce. The book does not discuss who is right or wrong. It does not take sides. I liked the fact that it helps a child not to get caught in the middle or take sides. Though written for girls, a boy could also benefit by reading the book. It answers so many of the questions a child wants/needs answered, but may not know how to ask. I have my opinions based on religion, but religion doesn't come into play in this book. It simply focuses on the child to help her cope with the situation, her feelings, and the changes in her lifestyle.

    Great read

I am 13 and I actually asked my mom to buy this for me. It read/skimmed it and I thought it was a really good book. It is for girls who's parents are going through a divorce and how to deal with it. I would recommend this to girls who are struggling. Even though I am not struggling anymore I thought it was a great read.
