Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sally S. Hoffman
Growing up is hard. The adolescent years are full of ups and downs; your body is changing, friends are changing, and parents are definitely changing. Girls need a way to express all of their changing emotions and how all of this is affecting their self-image. Zelinger brings just this with a self-help guide for girls. The book is divided into five sections: self-esteem basics, all about themselves, about others, being their best, and increasing their self-esteem. Each section has quizzes, quotes, games, journals, and a variety of activities to undertake to improve self-esteem. The quizzes will help girls understand where their own self-esteem ranks and how they can improve it without being judgmental. Everything is positive and uplifting. The author encourages girls to try out for a team, go for a walk, or perform a play. Girls need to be moving and trying new endeavors. This book could be used in a variety of settings. Small groups of differentiated girls would be ideal. Girls would likely be more honest in a small group then in a large group where they may feel self-conscious. On the other hand, a girl may want to complete this alone and just try the activities out with friends and family. Reviewer: Sally S. Hoffman

Gr 46—This slim title is filled with helpful advice for girls navigating life's ups and downs. The text discusses strategies to feel good about yourself and your abilities even when things are not going your way. Ideas for keeping self-esteem high are accompanied by colorful cartoon art, quizzes, and lists of do's and don'ts. The upbeat tone and solid tips are sure to bolster girls when they need to hear some positive affirmation. The encouraging words aren't particularly new, but everyone could use a gentle reminder that liking yourself and trusting your instincts will get you through the good days and the bad.—Elaine Baran Black, Georgia Public Library Service, Atlanta
