Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Lucy Schall
This user-friendly introduction to managing money offers common sense about making, spending, saving, and giving. Holyoke advises readers to separate emotion from goals and develop techniques for money communication. She cites good habits and paying attention as the foundation of good management and illustrates how the teenager can assess her talents, figure profits, work with partners, organize workspace, meet client expectations, and troubleshoot. Spending includes advice on shopping smart, refusing to buy, analyzing advertising, and dealing with plastic money. Saving considers habits, budgeting, earning money with money, building wealth, and the reality that rich is a relative term driven by individual expectations. The eye-catching illustrations and examples will appeal most to the middle school and junior high group. The consciousness-raising quizzes throughout the book complement the concrete, practical examples. A list of 101 possible money-making projects concludes the book. The weakest and most abstract section is "making money with money," which generally explains interest accounts, CDs, savings bonds, stocks, and mutual funds. American Girl invites the successful money manager to share ideas with American Girl magazine and directs them to the American Girl website to make business cards and supplies. The Web site is helpful, but it also directs the user to additional American Girl products. The book is good preparation for publications such as TeenVestor: The Practical Investment Guide for Teens and Their Parents (Perigree/Berkley Publishing Group, 2002/VOYA June 2002)), which contains more depth and detail.

Gr 5 Up-Presented in a colorful and fun format, this book is attractive and practical. Examples used are timely and age appropriate. Quizzes throughout reinforce the concepts presented and will help readers question current spending habits. The "101 money-making ideas" are practical and doable and range from completing chores to using individual talents and skills to start a business. Some of the ideas suggested could be used for fund-raising activities. Customer satisfaction, writing contracts, and sharing responsibilities are clearly discussed and will help prevent future problems. This book will be an excellent tool to promote the concept of saving money and having it work for you. A Web site is provided for printable items and business cards. A first purchase.-Kathleen A. This book was wonderful!
It is helpful in every way and It makes you wanna get up and start making money! The book has: Quiz's, Test, Advice that comes from other girls, plus a lot more!! They tell you all the tips on how stores try to get you to spend money you would have never ever though of! They teach you about the difference between a debit card and a credit card (but to me check cards are the best for preteens) This book it wonderful I think all preteen girls should have this book! They even teach you how to get a raise in your allowance WHICH REALLY WORKS! All preteen girls should have this book it's amazing!!! Seriously I think all preteen girls should buy this! This would probably be one of the best items you could possibly buy!!

I read this book all in one day. The day I got it. It taught me so many thing about money from how to save it, make it, and spend it! I had this book for about two years now and I read it at least two to three times a week! I recommend this book for any girl in the ages 8-12 that wants to learn more about money! You can also go on their website: www.americangirl.com and then click fun for girls, then girl buzz, and then to do today, and finally, money makers! P.S. they have a new topic for each to do today every day!

This book was truly fantastic. It gave information and advise that is very educational. There was more than 100 ideas to make money, such as "tutoring younger kids in your favorite subject", or "Be a personal trainer to someone who is getting ready for any sport. It also taught about stock market, interest, credit and debt cards, and bundles of more. I would reccomend this book to girls ages, 8 yrs.-14 yrs. There was more than 5 quizes to see if you are innovative, all the way to see what kind of shopper you are!

Out of all the 21 American Girl books I've read and bought(am I a fan, or what?), this one is probably the best. It is soooo... helpful. And, in my opinion, girls of any age should buy this book. I know you (after you buy this book) and I (after already reading it) will be much more successful, wise, resourceful, and better-off in life. Even if you are like me and don't even get an allowance, you still can make money. I, myself, think I will start making my own cards- like birthday cards and sympathy cards and Christmas cards, etc... I think it will be a great business because everyone else is babysitting or petsitting. In case you can't think of your own business, there are 101 money-making business ideas- ones that WILL work. I really can't get over how great this book is! You MUST buy it, and anyone who rates it lower than four stars is absolutely crazy!

I love this book. I'm going to start babysitting so I'll be getting a lot more money. Now I know not to blow all the money the day after you get it. **Saving tip** Put a picture of the thing you want most taped on where ever you keep your money. So you'll remember to save it!$$$
