All Music Guide - Cub Koda
By 1975, the Temptations were a much different group with both David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks out of the lineup. Dennis Edwards was now singing lead, and only Melvin Franklin and Otis Williams existed from the original group. The group was far more of a funk mind, and this set proves it. The big hit on here was "Happy People," with the Temps backed up by the Commodores, listed as "the Temptations Band" on the second part instrumental version. For ultra-funk, though, it's hard to beat "Glasshouse" and "Shakey Ground," which features guitar and bass work from P-Funk alumni Eddie Hazel and Billy Nelson. But they didn't leave their ballads entirely in the good old days, as the satin-drenched "Firefly," "Memories" and the title track clearly show. Produced by Jeffrey Bowen, this thing has "'70s'" stamped all over it. In the case of the Temps, that's good.

    Incorrect Track Times

I purchased this CD only because the online description shows the track times for "Glasshouse" and "Shakey Ground" as 3:06 and 3:15, respectively. Since I already own the "Emperors of Soul" collection, which also contains the extended versions of these songs, I would never have purchased the CD if the online description had been correct!

    The Best Tempts CD

I grew up in a musical family (my grandfather and his brother and their uncle sang in a group from the 50s, and my great-grandmother, grandmother, mother and I all play piano and sing), so I have a great appreciation for REAL music with talented singers. I have always been a HUGE fan of the Temptations, but this Tempts disc remains my ABSOLUTE favorite! I remember listening to my mother's "vinyl" LP from beginning to end, over and over and over. Of course, no male group can compare to the original Temptations lineup that included David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks. But Norman Whitfield's productions and Dennis Edwards' voice took the group in a new, refreshingly edgier and more soulful direction. Each song on this disc clearly stands on its own, be it a beautiful ballad or a gritty uptempo number. The Temptations continued to make great music after this studio album, but this one displays them at their pinnacle. If you don't have this one in your collection, be sure to pick it up before it's out of print!

    The Temptations still GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the album that made people finally accept Dennis Edwards as a Temptation and let David Ruffin go. The leads by Dennis were soulful and stirring. It ranks as one of the Tempts best studio albums.
