Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debby Buchanan
In this anthology of 95 poems for children there are selections, both new and old, from all over the world. With authors as well known as Walt Whitman, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and A. A. Milne, children are introduced to poems from Australia, England, China, Scotland, India, Siberia, Greenland, the Caribbean, and even the American Southwest's Acoma culture. Plenty of illustrations help make this a book that will appeal to children everywhere.

Gr 1-5-A joyous collection of over 90 poems in which Rosen's love of language, life, and nonsense comes through. The volume is impressively wide-ranging in scope, from nursery rhymes to songs (``My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean'') to nature poems (Karla Kuskin's ``When I Went Out''), and the selector does not underestimate the minds of the young; works by Shakespeare and Gnter Grass are included. Poems such as Issa's ``One Bath,'' ``Burp'' (anon.), and Jay Reed's ``When I Was Small'' reflect children's experiences. A strength of the collection is the undercurrent of humor and unexpected happenings, as well as the selections' terseness and elements of repetition. Pencil sketches extend the poems, adding great appeal and charm to the book. While some of the selections may be too British for American children, there is a rich abundance of verse for a variety of ages.-Ronald Jobe, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada
