Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Its novelty format is the most distinctive element of this sweet if familiar rhyming rendition of the Nativity story. Animals, alone or with their young, "see a star shining bright,/ Filling the world/ with its silvery light." Large-scale illustrations take advantage of the oversize pages, letting readers share the perspectives of smiling bear cubs or foxes as they gaze skyward. A foil star gleams through the star-shaped diecut that grows slightly larger on each spread as the story draws closer to Bethlehem. On the final page, where a lamb joins other animals visiting a slumbering, swaddled infant Jesus, the star is revealed in full sparkle: electronic lights blink all around it. Ages 3-7. (Oct.)

Children's Literature - Mary Hynes-Berry
This Christmas book is full of visual bells and whistles as die-cuts of a foil star get increasingly larger with each turned page, until it literally twinkles on the last page. Very young children are likely to be attracted both by this feature and by the illustrations, which are drawn in lush nighttime colors. In many ways, this book is likely to be a comfortable choice for families that are only vaguely religious, as the text soft-pedals any religious message in its retelling of the first Christmas. The only human to appear is the child in the manger on the last page. A rhyming quatrain is used to express the wonder of the star felt by the brown bear family on the cover, as well as the fox, hare, and deer, owls, geese, and finally lambs who actually approach the infant. Originally issued in England, the book has finally made it to the States. Once the season is past, it will probably find a home in bookstores who deal with remainders. Reviewer: Mary Hynes-Berry
School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1-Various animals are mesmerized by a special star in the night sky. The rhythmic text flows easily and introduces a fox family, a hare, bear cubs, deer, an owl, a goose and her goslings, mice, a cat with her kittens, and, finally, a lamb. The last page has the star surrounded by twinkling lights above a babe in a manger surrounded by the stable animals. Pedler's charming illustrations are a perfect mix for this calming depiction of Christmas Eve. While it may not feel as magical when the twinkling lights stop working, this simple Nativity story will still make a fine holiday read-aloud.-Diane Olivo-Posner, Long Beach Public Library, CA

Kirkus Reviews
The star over Bethlehem is the focus of this gentle story of Christmas Eve, one that is short enough and simple enough for younger preschoolers who are just learning about the Nativity story. Three appealing bears gaze up at a large, glittery star on the cover's right corner, leading the reader into the oversized volume where the star motif is repeated in the same position on each spread. Different animals in each succeeding spread look up at the star in the same way, with a short rhyming verse to identify the animals and explore their feelings of wonderment. The star on each spread is die-cut to allow the glittering star from the final page to shine through, and each succeeding die-cut star grows bigger in size as the pages are turned. The final page shows the stable animals gathered around the Christ Child in the manger with the huge, sparkling star overhead, with this final star twinkling for added effect. Pedler's animal characters, often shown in family groups, have a sweet charm, especially one little duck who gazes in amazement at the star's reflection in a pond. (Picture book. 2-5)
