What People Are Saying

Church Libraries
Delightful describes Bottke's first novel. The well-written plot provokes genuine compassion and concern interlaced with cheering. The reader won't know until the last page is turned how it will end. The characters are developed with razor-sharp wit and life-changing faith. The plot is exceptional. Women will especially enjoy the realistic views of relationships and surgical recovery.

A Book With Take Home Valu

The day after I got home from the hospital following my Roun-ex-Y weight loss surgery my daughter brought me Allison Bottke's book A Stitch in Time. She had gotten it out of the library and enjoyed it so she brought it to share with me before taking it back.

I am so glad I read it. The story is interesting in it's own right, but the added twist of what Dee went through with the challenges of her new digestive system thickens the plot. Although every person's experience will be different, I learned a lot abut what to expect in the coming days.

This is a book with real take home valu.

    A reviewer

This was a really fun book to read. I enjoyed reading about Dee's business with all the movie stars. Loved the costume ball sequence with Patrick Swayze. I also enjoyed that the person who had kept doing wrong to Dee finally got found out and punished, without Dee extracting her own revenge. I also liked since Dee is new Christian, she is eager to share about her faith but she knows not to blast it out to people when they feel uncomfortable. She's still mostly the same person though, feeling insecure about herself and hoping that plastic surgery will ease all her troubles away. I enjoyed the fashion, shoes, clothes talk in the book. It made it more fun for me to hear about designer names even though I will never be able to afford them! Dee's a very likable character and the reader constantly wants to cheer her on. I felt that it was also very realistic to show that society was treating Dee better just because she was skinnier. Yes Christians are suppose to love everyone, but it's also truth that looks ARE being judged in society. The only thing I didn't like was that I felt the ending was a little too tidied up. I honestly didn't see why she had to go back to Lyle. Yes she should forgive him, but that doesn't mean she can't be angry with him. He lost her trust, she didn't have to take him back. I know he became a Christian but I would have liked to see him at least become more spiritually mature before Dee took him back. Other than this, this book is highly recommended. It's targeted for the baby-boomer set but I believe anyone who likes a fun chick lit book will enjoy this one at any age.

    Fun, Yet Thoughtful

This is a fun read! The plot kept me guessing--and turning pages. It's my favorite kind of read: fun, yet thoughtful.

    Highly recommended

I loved this book from page 1 to page 364. Bottke's characters are fun, dynamic and quirky, and you see them through Dee's eyes¿warts and all. I didn't like Lyle Decker one bit. That's where Bottke displays her talent as a writer. This is an inspirational novel, right? We're supposed to want what God wants and that's for marriages to be healed. Well I didn't want that. The guy was a louse and I wanted Dee to ditch him. Bottke kept me so inside Dee's head, I felt like Dee, oblivious to her/my own faults. Everything she/I did was right. And when the past collides with the present, Dee and I were both in for some eye-opening experiences. I won't give away the ending, but I can tell you A Stitch in Time receives a definite high recommendation from me. Bravo, Allison¿give us more!

    Friendly and Familiar

It¿s not often a character comes along that says, ¿I know you. You and me, we share a lot.¿ Thankfully it was the heroine of Allison Bottke¿s début novel A Stitch in Time rather than one of Ted Dekker¿s villains. However, Ms. Bottke¿s Dee Decker actually goes farther than I have ever dreamed and has dealt with marital problems I¿ve not known (thank you, Lord)¿kind of like the Indiana Jones for recent empty-nesting moms. I loved it. Fresh and sassy, Ms. Bottke paints her scenes with clarity and drops you right into galas aboard the Queen Mary and mansions in the Las Vegas desert. The first-person-present style makes you privy to Dee¿s most intimate thoughts. I didn¿t know those thoughts had ever escaped my addled brain, but rather than scare me, it was nice to know I wasn¿t alone. As the back cover will tell you, ¿Dee is out to prove that middle-aged Christian woman can be faithful, fashionable, and fabulous!¿ I think she makes her case. A fashionably fun read, I highly recommend A Stitch in Time.

My first taste of Lady Lit was a real palate-pleaser!

This is my first taste of Lady Lit and I LOVED IT! You don't have to be middle aged to enjoy this one. The glamorous parties, the intriguing situations, and the slow spiritual awakening of several characters all lead to one satisfied sigh when God works things out in the end. I have to admit I didn't see the end coming in the beginning, but I REALLY love the way the author wove several themes together, which led the reader to ultimately rejoicing with Dee in the end. Poor Dee was so into herself that she just didn't see how God was working around her. I'm impressed with how the author made me like Dee despite herself. I empathized with her from page one. I appreciated how the author showed that Dee's image of herself hadn't changed even though her outward body had transformed. We're all the same on the inside. True beauty is in the heart. The strong moral theme in regard to the sacredness of marriage touched me profoundly, and though it's clear that Dee had valid Biblical grounds for divorce, I love how the author worked out the issues to convey a profound truth...that marriages are built and destroyed by both partners. It's never a totally one way street. Major kudos for Allison Bottke on her first novel. You can bet I'll be first in line for her book coming out in 2007. Love her unique author 'voice' and loved this Lady Lit. It's one of a kind!

Honest and fun Hip Lit read

Allison's debut novel was a journey into a fascinating world of high society, life after weight loss surgery, and what it means to follow God when life doesn't make sense. Dee was a heroine whose thoughts and actions resonated with deep insight, honest faults, and triumph. A Stitch in Time provided a very satisfying read while challenging me to think about issues beyond my everyday life and how God's love and forgiveness are vital to being comfortable in your own skin.

    A Real Page Turner

Allison Bottke so accurately portrays the honest struggles of being a new Christian in the real world and trying to remain hip. This book is not only fun and a great read but one that so many women can relate to. I can't wait to read her next book.

A delightful inspirational chick lit charmer

In Los Angeles Dee Harris Decker rediscovered religion and her toes at about the same time she learned her spouse was cheating on her. The fortyish Dee left her philandering mate Lyle and underwent gastric bypass surgery to drop well over a hundred pounds in order to start over. Though she started her new vocation just after her surgery, she has become one of the best at raising funds, which ironically also brings out the best in her as she enjoys doing this especially for a good cause. ------------------ Dee has reached another crossroad, but this time she is filled with confidence that the Lord will help her choose correctly. Her project might make her a Nevada rancher¿s wife, but Lyle assisted by their adult daughter Kelsey has other plans for his now size ten svelte ex wife.----------- The key to this delightful inspirational chick lit charmer is Dee. The physical make over helps, but it is her spiritual, mental and emotional changes that turn her into a success and the novel into a fine inspiring read. Allison Bottke emphasizes Dee¿s trials and tribulations as she becomes all that she can be with for the most part the bypass is bypassed as helpful but minor if one fails to heal the soul and the mind.--------------- Harriet Klausner
