Using a quilt as the centerpiece for this first book in "The Quilt Trilogy," Rinaldi weaves an intricate and provocative story about the Chelmsford family-twelve-year-old Cabot, thirteen-year-old Thankful, fifteen-year-old Abigail, seventeen-year-old Hannah, nineteen-year-old Lawrence, and their controlling father-set in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1788. Hannah tells this story borne of Rinaldi's "desire to write about a family that gets torn apart, seemingly by events outside the home, but actually due to dark undercurrents from within, undercurrents that reach out from the past, like threads which begin to unravel under the pressure of everyday life and threaten the very fabric of its existence." In the "Author's Note," Rinaldi reveals her research process and the historical facts upon which the story is based. Ann Rinaldi's A Stitch in Time, set in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1788, blends richly detailed historical fiction with the timeless theme of the struggle to keep a family together in spite of jealousy, pride, and bigotry. Sixteen-year-old Hannah Chelmsford must learn to confront her domineering father in order to help her brothers and sisters find fulfillment. For herself, Hannah must unlock the secret her father has carried since the war against the British, thereby overcoming her inability to trust those who care for her. Suspense begins immediately with a scheme to help Hannah's sister elope. The novel can be forgiven for being melodramatic at times because it works so well-even the minor characters are intriguing. A lively plot provides plenty of surprises while the patchwork quilt Hannah is trying to finish serves as an eloquent symbol of a family in pieces. Middle school readers of this novel will eagerly await the second in Rinaldi's Quilt Trilogy.

In this first book of her "Quilt Trilogy," Rinaldi uses the metaphor of a quilt to attempt to hold together the frayed members of the Chelmsford family in post-Revolutionary War Salem. Responsible middle sister Hannah worries about elder sister Abby's elopement, younger sister Thankful's captivity by Indians, her mother's ancient indiscretion and her father's abusiveness in this YA novel with more subplots than a soap opera.

Nathaniel, the patriarch, is aloof and puritanical. He leaves for a trip to the Ohio frontier and takes Thankful with him. With two sisters gone, one brother in rebellion, and the other leading the western expedition, Hannah is left as the family sentinel. She takes solace in the quilt she is making from scraps given to her by special friends and family. As she tells her story and stitches her quilt, the patchwork of their lives takes shape. Hannah grows as she learns to cope with startling facts of her deceased mother's life, the return of an old flame, and her own love for a dashing sea captain. There is plenty of personal interest, adventure, humor, fear, and joy in this ambitious novel, and more action than in Rinaldi's In My Father's House (Scholastic, 1993). The appealing characters ring true. However, this is a long book, and Rinaldi occasionally waxes philosophical as Hannah ponders her fate. The research is well documented, and the quilt theme is a unique strand that will eventually pull all three books and sisters together.     THE START OF AN AMAZING TALE

    I read this one and all the others in this series. This is a wonderful series of a families hardships and their happiness. Great book to read. Don't stop here though read the whole series. Anyone who reads it will enjoy it!

    Another Rinaldi Hit!

    Ann Rinaldi is one of my favorite historical fiction writers and she didn't disappoint me in this book. It was fantastic and everyone should read it!

    Awesome book!

    I absolutly loved reading this book! I did it for a book report and read it in two days, I couldn't put it down. A teenage Hannah living shortly after the Revolutonary War finds her family falling apart more and more before her eyes. She begins sewing a family quilt, with a peice of fabric from everyone trusted, to sew the peices of her family togeather. With romance, action, and descriptive life during the 1800's, you won't be able to put it down.

    The best book ever written

    This book was the first Ann Rinaldi book that I read. After reading this book, I have read numerous books written by Rinaldi. I have not read one that has had a stronger impact on me. I will never forget this book.

    A great book!

    This book was REALLY good. Ann Rinaldi writes to capture the reader and she did just that in this book. There is always something happening to keep the reader interested. I really like the ending of this book.

    WOW

    i feel this is one of rinaldis best books. you dont know whats gonna happen next. hannah is trying to be a mother figure to all her siblings even after she found out what her mother did. i think richard is so sweet to hannah in helping her get her life together. what he did to make everybody except louis' baby is the sweetest thing i have ever heard. i totally reccomend this book to anyone.

    GREAT-just like her others

    The best in the Quilt Trilogy, this book leaves you wondering 'what happens next'? This book is about a sixteen year old girl who tries to take the place of her mother in a house of a troubled family. Every character has a story to them, which makes this book so great! This book takes place shortly after the Revolution, which Hannah's father fought in. This time period also starts the beginning of women working in mills. I strongly suggest reading the author's notes in any of Ann Rinaldi's books. I guarantee you will make the grade in American History!!

    This is by far my favorite book

    I fell in love with the characters. Especially Richard Lander. Ann Rinaldi describes Richard so vividly that every time Richard said something my heart jumbed (sp?). I even envied Hannah for being so lucky to find anyone sas cool as Richard Lander. I have read this book 3 times and my friends think that I am obsessed(sp?)

    A Story of Trust and Loyalty

    Ann Rinaldi writes a story of a family who is broken apart because of a fathers way of thinking. Hannah, a 16-teen year old must take the place of her died mother from the age of six. When all her brothers and sisters start growing up she must control her brother, Caleb, from wanting to run away to sea, her sister Abigal from eloping with her true love, she must control Thankful her other sister from telling their ill- tempared father about Abigals plans of eloping. To do all this she makes a quilt with a peice of cloth from everyone they trust. As life goes on Hannahs old Beau comes to her with a half Indian Baby which is his and asks Hannah to watch her for him.

    A Struggle for Life

    Hannah has to struggle through life. The lose of her first love, her mother, and both of her sisters. With every turn she tries to fix the mistakes she makes, only to make things worse by involving, and hurting more people. A page turner.

    This book is the best

    I loved this book it was filled with touching events that took place in Hannah's life. This book helps to see what the Ravalotionary War did to families back then. You have to read this book, it's AWSOME!!!!!!
