British Columbia singer/songwriter and bass-player Trisha Gagnon grew up listening to her mother's music, a wide variety from rock and soul to folk and gospel. The last decade has seen her as a key member of John Reischman & the Jaybirds, and her contributions to their bluegrass shows and four albums have been monumental. When Trisha's sister (Cathy-Anne McClintock) released an album of her own material, Trisha decided that it was time for her relaxed songs to also find a home on disc. Cathy-Anne sings harmony with Trisha on four cuts on her shining debut solo release (A Parent's Prayer, On My Way To You, Farewell, and The River of Life). The other members of The Jaybirds (John Reischman, Greg Spatz, Nick Hornbuckle, Jim Nunally) are also front and center with strong instrumental and vocal support. To a lesser degree, other instrumental accompaniment comes from Roger Gillespie (percussion), Rob Ickes (Dobro), and Tony Furtado (bottle-neck guitar). Gillespie adds just the right beat to the swinging "Deeper in Love" in which Gagnon and Nunally sing about growing a strong family tree, a sentiment that seems to be the foundational cornerstone of this album. Besides showcasing Trisha's singularly impressive talents and appealing voice, "A Story About You and Me" adds the emotional impact of several other guest vocalists -- Vince Gill, Shaun Cromwell, Peter Rowan, Laurie Lewis, Keith Little, Kathy Kallick, and Chris Jones. "Hummingbird" is a fleeting and flying bluegrass number that incorporates vocal harmonies from Lewis and Little. "On My Way To You," the duet with Gill, is a powerful and poetic statement of yearning for home, being homeward bound, and keeping a loved one in your thoughts and prayers. In Trisha's case, home is the Fraser River Valley where she grow berries and makes homemade jams. Cromwell's distinctive voice is heard in tandem with Trisha's on the two album closers, "When Am I Gonna Get Over You" and "He's Here With Me." The former is the album's only cover, written by Bryan White and John Tirro. The album has a wonderfully earthy side with songs of family, friendship, farewells, forgiveness and faith. Captured in song, Trisha Gagnon's intelligent and thoughtful sentiments will certainly bring her further recognition as a very accomplished singer/songwriter. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, Oregon)
