The acclaimed, best-selling, blockbuster debut finally comes to Barnes and Noble's Nook! Over 15,000 copies sold in its first three months! 4.5 stars in 170 Amazon reviews! An Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Quarter-Finalist!

"Solid adventure, intrigue and speculative space-tech, from a rising star in military science fiction." -- DAVID BRIN, Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author of 'EXISTENCE,' 'THE POSTMAN,' and 'STARTIDE RISING'

HUMANITY IS NO LONGER ALONE IN THE UNIVERSE. AN UNKNOWABLE THREAT APPROACHES EARTH . . . AND WE ARE COMPLETELY UNPREPARED TO FACE WHAT'S COMING.

Aerospace tycoon Gordon Elliot Lee cannot stand idly by while a mysterious alien presence from Delta Pavonis bears down upon mankind's only home. Shut out from NASA and military support, Gordon is forced to go it alone, to sow the seeds for an entirely new sort of planetary defense: a space-based naval force.

Joined by Nathan Kelley -- a bloodied naval warrior, scarred by his own actions in the waters off North Korea -- and Kris Munoz -- an avant garde scientific genius with more ideas than sense -- these three will scour the very edges of fringe science and engineering to attempt development of Earth's first space navy in time to oppose the Deltan invasion.

Beset by ridicule, government obstruction, industrial espionage, and their own personal demons, it will take a miracle just to get off the ground. But the challenges on Earth are nothing compared to what awaits them in space. Against an unknown alien enemy with vastly superior technology, a handful of human scientists and warriors must become the sword that holds the darkness at bay.

MISSILES WILL FLASH, RAILGUNS WILL RUMBLE, LASERS WILL BURN, AND DEFENDERS WILL DIE.

IF THEY FAIL, OUR END IS AT HAND.

"There are brilliant first contact stories, great space combat stories, and amazing stories of technological discovery. Rarely do you find all three in the same novel. Remember the name Thomas A. Mays. You're going to be seeing it on the bestseller list." -- JEFF EDWARDS, Award-winning author of 'SEA OF SHADOWS,' and 'THE SEVENTH ANGEL'

"Sharply written, suspenseful and tightly plotted, A SWORD INTO DARKNESS reads like the best Tom Clancy novels, with a science fiction heart provided by Arthur C. Clark. Can't wait to read more from Thomas Mays!" -- GRAHAM BROWN, #1 New York Times Bestselling author of 'ZERO HOUR,' 'BLACK RAIN,' and 'THE EDEN PROPHECY'

I picked up this book because it popped up in my recommendations from Kindle and I thought it sounded interesting enough for me to have a go at it. I have to say that the book was a bit of a surprise. Not that the actual story was not what I expected but I am surprised at how much I liked the book. Most of it is simply excellent ... I found the book very well written and very captivating. The characters are well done, the science well thought through and as believable as one can expect.

A Sword Into Darkness is the debut effort of Thomas A. Mays. The best way to describe the book is as a mix of hard science fiction, military science fiction, and space opera. All of these pieces are woven together into a tapestry that for the most part, works pretty well. As a debut novel, it does have a few things here and there that could use some improvement, but oftentimes those kinds of things are distracting. In this book they are not distracting.

Meet the Author

Thomas A. Mays (Tom) is an 19-years-and-counting veteran of the US Navy, working as an officer in the surface fleet aboard destroyers and amphibious ships, as well as teaching and assisting with research into electromagnetic weapons and ballistic missile defense. He has two degrees in applied physics, but his passion is writing (he tries not to let what he actually knows get in the way of telling a good story). "A Sword Into Darkness" is his first published novel, but he is working on a sequel (among other projects) and releasing an anthology of his published and unpublished military science fiction, "REMO" in April, 2014. Tom usually lives wherever the Navy tells him to (currently North Carolina), making a home with his lovely wife, three beautiful kids, and an insane Hawaiian mutt. The perfect balance of technology, action, suspense and ruthlessly evil aliens. Tom Mays is a masterful storyteller who keeps the reader on the edge page after page. Can't say enough superlatives for this premiere novel. Nice job Mr Mays!

I never give five stars except to make the point that the book is a must read, The author is new but you will not think so by his writting, The storyline, character development, and excellent hard science fiction will keep you fully engage and wanting a sequel after the end, It is action packed, but contains good character interaction, Give it a try, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPOINTED

An excellent read in all respects; well written, thoughtful and I found absolutely zero editing / spelling errors (which is getting to an exception rather than the rule).  The plot was interesting and I was entertained to the point that I completed it in a single day. I am retired U.S. Navy myself, and I appreciated the accuracy in the language and mindset that was described. Also being a fan of John Ringo and Eric Flint, I agree with another poster that this book in on par with my favorite reads from them.  Military fiction / military sci-fi seems to be a good niche for Mays and I hope to see more from him in the future.

T.A.Mays has written an interesting book on interstellar travel and the development of same. Most stories start with proven technologies but he develops the whole theory! Personal interests are handled very well and add interest to the story. Hope many more books come from this author!
