Wait For The New Version or Use Something Else

The e-trainer's adaptive track would be a great time-saver. Having it on a CD instead of a 'brick' book is a great idea as well. Unfortunately, this CD is for the former version of the test. Switching to Michael Myers' guide worked for me. I passed the test with points to spare.

    Disappointing

I have had other Sybex products recommended to me in the past, so I bought this based on the Sybex name and was disappointed. While it was a fair beginners guide to many of the concepts the 'interactive' linking of test questions to the CD lectures didn't always seem to match. When I took the practice test and missed a question, the link often didn't clearly address the question, sometimes only addressing the topic on another related matter. A detailed explanation, (like some of the other vendors do on sample tests) would have been more helpful. Also, some of the sample questions on the CD seemed awful vague, and helped very little in preparation for the actual test. If you are totally new to the field, the e-trainer will go over some things you may not have the opportunity to experience, (like the color shots of DOS and Windows 3.1 installs.) On the other hand, if you are an experienced tech looking for a way to brush up on your skills for the test, this is NOT what you need.

May be OK for you, but I still prefer paper books . . .

This is a study format based strictly on using the PC as your study tool. I took classes to achieve my CNE and then self studied using SYBEX books to get my MCSE. I thought I'd give the e-trainer a try since the A+ certification wouldn't be as intensive, but just didn't care for it. Imagine sitting in a class and relying on the instructor giving you every bit of information verbally with a few supporting slides highlighting bullet points. That's what you'll see using the e-trainer. I can't imagine a beginner using this format and making a passing grade. It's informative and interesting, but not test quality material in my opinion. I'm taking Sybex up on their 30-day money back guarantee and will purchase a book set to complete the A+ certification. It may work for you, but I still want a book to carry anywhere I feel like studying.
