Overview

On April 10th, 2003, the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, faced with the task of seizing the presidential palace in downtown Baghdad, ran headlong into what Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North called, "the worst day of fighting for U.S. Marines." Hiding in buildings and mosques, wearing civilian clothes, and spread out for over a mile, Saddam Hussein's militants rained down bullets and rocket propelled grenades on the 1st Battalion. But when the smoke of the eight-hour battle cleared, only one Marine had lost his life. Some said the 1st Battalion was incredibly lucky. But in the hearts and minds of the Marines who were there, there was no question. God had brought them miraculously through that battle.

As the 1st Battalion's chaplain, Lieutenant Carey Cash had the unique privilege of seeing firsthand, from the beginning of the war to the end, how God miraculously delivered, and even transformed, the lives of the men of the 1st Battalion.

A TABLE IN THE PRESENCE brings new life in the thought of war and how American does run off "In God We Trust"

A Table In The Presence by Lt. Carey Cash is a very inspiration book. It brought what being a soldier was like on the frontlines in Iraq to the everyday American. It shared what our men have to deal with across seas and how many of them turn to God for answers. In A Table In The Presence, Lt. Carey H. Cash is a chaplain in the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment. He travels around performing different worship services and fulfilling different needs of men in the Marines. But during the mean time he is dodging bullets just like the rest of them and dealing with what happens on the front lines of war. He was there on April 10th when they stormed Saddam Hussein's Palace as well as on the front lines when Baghdad was invaded. He has to deal with the threats that everyone else is having, but yet he still manages to keep his head high and keep the morale up of many other marines fighting along side him even though he doesn't carry a gun. Carey Cash leaves a very descriptive journal and shares his life changing experiences with the rest of us who don't get to experience the things others get to experience. Chaplains may not seem very crucial to war but after reading this book, it's amazing how many people rely on a chaplain. The major themes in the book would have to be perseverance, trust, honor, and Semper Fidelis. The men of the 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment had to persevere when they thought it wasn't possible as well as trust in something that they couldn't see but yet they knew it was there. And that was the presence of God. They also kept their heads high and kept their honor when they thought that was the last thing they needed. And the marines always stuck to Semper Fidelis which means "always faithful" no matter what the decision was. I would also say reliance, because many of the men relied on God to get them through the day as well as relying on Cash to perform worship services in the middle of the desert. I thought it was a great book and would recommend it. It was a very interesting book and I didn't have very many dislikes. The only thing I would say that I disliked would have to be how some of the journal entries would just be long run-ons. Sometimes people don't realize all God does for us and this goes to show living proof that there is someone out there looking after us. If someone is looking for that proof of, there being someone out there that's bigger than us I would recommend reading this book and acknowledging what miracles have happened in Iraq. So overall it was a great book and would try and convince you to read it if military stories interest you, and if you're curious about how God can be anywhere.

A must read for those who lack faith

An outstanding piece of front line reporting from someone who was there and in uniform. If you believe in God and and wear the uniform of any branch of service, I highly recommend this book. It is a well written memoir of someone in a unique situation: Chaplain Cash wears the uniform of a US Marine but he is a non-combatant. The stories of the battles fought by the Marines and the faith that sustains them throughout the their tour in Iraq is truly inspiring.

I received the book just before a flight I had to take overseas. I finished the book before I landed. It was so gripping and an inspiration to me as a Christian. You can truly see God's hand in the midst of war. Buy it now and then pass it along for a different view of the war in Iraq.

The best book I have ever read!

I had to pick a book to read for English class and as a sophmore in highschool I admit that I am interested in war. Also, I am a Christian and since the two topics came together in a book that had to do with current events, this book seemed perfect. As I started reading, I couldn't put the book down. It was extremely inspiring and I recommend it to everyone.

A Reminder That God and His Angels Walk Among Us Even When We Least Expect It!

As a wife of an Army National Guard soldier, this book gave me hope and strength to face my husbands deployment. I pray the Lord will walk with all the soldiers and their families as they go through this trying time. For me it was a matter of believing in Poverbs 3:5-6. 'Trust the Lord with all your heart, and lean not upon your won understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path.' May God Bless all of our soldiers and keep them safe!

A Powerful Account God's Protection and Promise

A truly powerful work that demonstrates God's faithfulness to his servants. From the deserts of Kuwait to the walls of Saddam's palace in Baghdad, Lt. Cash chronicles how God personally met the needs of the men of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine regiment. Reading the accounts of the marines, one can truly begin to see fulfillment of God's promises:'You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness...For He will command his Angels concerning you to guard you in all of your ways...' (Psalm 91: 5,6,11). Thank you for reminding us that God is with us, especially in the places we might least expect. And thank God for being a God who loves us enough to meet us right where we need him to be.

    Unbelievably True!

This is simply an amazing collection of experience during combat in the Iraq war. It is worthy of sitting in either the Religious or Military History sections of any library or book store. You just have to read the stories for yourself, that seem like Hollywood fiction until you remember that they are in fact true, as told straight from the people who saw and experienced the blessing that they continually prayed for during the war.

    What an inspiration.

This book is a must read for anyone that wants to hear the true story about the good things that are happening in this war. As a Christian soldier in Iraq right now, I could feel the presence of God here as I read. With all the negativity that is in the air right now about this conflict, it is nice that someone is willing to tell the truth. This books is making its rounds amongst my comrades in arms and it is changing lives. Anyone doubting that God still performs miracles won't after this read.

Well done good and faithful servant LT Cash!!!!

This is a must read for all believers, non-believers and all who question our presence in Iraq. It is a powerful account of God¿s presence in the lives of these dedicated soldiers on the battlefields of Iraq. LT. Cash is an excellent historian and compelling storyteller; I could not put this book down and was moved to tears multiple times. I am proud to be a dentist in the United States Naval Reserves and am honored and privileged to have quite possibly examined and/or treated some of these young Marines.

An inspiring and comforting account of God's presence.

I could not put this inspirational and comforting book down. As a wife of a Marine in First Battalion, Fifth Marines, I can honestly say that I'm impressed by the accurate accounts of both the people involved and events that occured during OIFI. Lt. Carey Cash's book comforted me with heartwarming stories and descriptions of the undeniable, loving presence of God in their lives during trying times. This book has it all- letters from home; prayers and scripture; love stories; tales of God's presence; accounts of 1/5's experiences during the war; friendships strengthened;and hope when faced with adversity. This story shows how in the midst of eye-witnessing the suffering of the Iraqi people, grieving over fallen fellow Marines, and fearing what the days may bring, God's love and grace gave them all strength and courage to face each day.

You'll be in His presence if you read

A wonderful blessing, this book. I spied it out of the corner of my eye on the way out of the store and made an impulse buy. The best impulse buy I've ever made. A wondeful insight into the providence of God and excellent reading whether a believer or not. Thanks to the author and all who participated.

As good as I had hoped

Once I started reading I could not put it down. What a true blessing it is to hear a FIRST-HAND account of how God is working in the lives of people. But it was not only spiritually revealing. The insight into battle and the suspense of going into Baghdad--I was on the edge of my seat. I so much appreciate Lt. Cash sharing his experiences. This is (for me) a very memorable book. I will read it again, and again. I am proud of Marines, and I am blessed to be a part of the family of God.
